New Ruger American Compact 9mm in Patriot Brown

Got a Ruger American Compact in Patriot Brown. A Davidson's Exclusive. I really like the Gun, shoots great and looks good. However, I'm a little concerned about the finish. I only shot 100 rounds through it and noticed some significant flaking off the finish inside the slide. I don't know if this is "normal" or perhaps just a bad job at the place of coating.ImageUploadedByOutdoor Forums1492716240.456442.jpgImageUploadedByOutdoor Forums1492716406.807793.jpgImageUploadedByOutdoor Forums1492716438.494926.jpg

I'm concerned that it could work its way to the outside of the slide and then look like junk. You can take your fingernail and easily flake of more with ease. I thought it would be more durable than that. What is yall's opinion?

Thanks,

I would think anything inside the slide is overspray/inadvertent. Is the surface on the outside of the slide ok?

I would worry about it when it happens excessively outside the frame. Inside the frame isn't a big deal. The coating will wear, but it should be slow. Duracoat and Cerakote are pretty tough, but it will eventually rub off.

Nice pistol btw!

The outside is fine.....for now. I'm afraid a holster would eventually wear the finish off and it start flaking. I may be paranoid too.

Called them this morning, and they said I could send it back and they would send me a new one. I'm just wondering if I need to ask them if I can swap it for a Regular Black one.

The finish will wear in a holster. It's inevitable. I have applied a lot of Cerakote. So far, what you are showing isn't anything to worry about.

I've seen Cerakote wear, but flaking off? Seems a little weird to me.

Yeah, you can rub your finger nail across it and it will flake and chip off. I can understand wear and rubbing off over time. Maybe I shouldn't be concerned as long as it's on the inside of the slide.

Hey no big deal its your hard earned money spent you just want to protect your investment. Only other thing would be to exchange for another pistol to see if things are different.

RAP1984 is an unknown quantity at this point
Nice pistol. Don't worry about the inside of the slide. I'm surprised they used the patriot brown color job on the inside instead of keeping it stock black in there. But maybe that's just me. Either way it's a good pistol

If you scroll through this thread, you'll see some excellent images showing Cerakote wear with use.

https://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=761442

Images start with one on p. 7, and then from p.15 on.

I believe the finish wear was the reason from the eventual switch from Cerakote to Ionbond.

Best, Jon

Flakes in the works? No thanks. That's a failed coating, exchange it.
