SR45 Ammo issue

I have a new SR45 that I really like and I've fired about 300 rnds of ball ammo through it and it functions wonderfully. I bought some Hornaday hollow points for personal protection to keep at the house and when I went to fire a couple of magazines to get a feel for them, I kept getting feed failures. Out of 24 rounds I have fired I have had 6 feed failures. I am attributing this to the sharper angle of the actual bullet and the high load angle from the magazine into the chamber. Those that do load fire just fine so no issues there. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you resolve it.

I have never liked Critical Defense, and Critical Duty for just that reason. I have had issues with it in .380, and 9mm.

I like to run a good round nosed HP, such as Remington Golden Saber. My carry load is Golden Saber 185gr +P 45 ACP. I have never had a failure in close to 500 rounds of that ammo, and that's in a gun that has a reputation for being finicky, a Kahr CM45

You may need to have your feed ramp polished and your chamber mouth throated or it could be a problem that is magazine related. If you get reliable feeding with hardball, I also recommend that you try Remington Golden Sabre HP ammo. That HP bullet feeds like hardball in most 1911s. If your 1911 will not feed Golden Sabre, then you have a problem with the gun that needs to be taken care of.

It may just be that particular type of ammo from Hornady.

Try some other brands and you may find that they feed just fine.

Check your extractor tension also. Mine was so tight I literally had to pry it out of the gun in order to tune it. You will want to make sure your pistol is tuned for utmost reliability if you're going to use it for protection.

Just curious, did you polish the feed ramp before using the HP ammo. I had a SR45 that had the same issue with that same ammo, but after using some good medical grade polishing compound & a Dremel polishing kit, the FTF issues went away. I also had a defected mag. I sent it back to Ruger the mag, when they received it sent me a new one.

Hornady hollow point snag the ramp easy on my .45 auto 1911 and on my Canik 9mm full size. The rounder Berrys SD bullets feed fine.

As other recommend try different ammo if you still have the problem send the gun back to Ruger.

I had the exact same problem with my SR45 and the Critical Defense HPs, all the other HPs I tried worked fine.

I use the Federal HST's in my SR45 and they shoot fine. That's my home defense load. 230 grain FMJ's shoot good too, of course.

try remington 185 grain hollow points they mimic the contour of ball ammo and back in the day they fed in 1911s that would not feed other hollowpoints. I mean the "regular stuff not the premium.

Other than trying to make sure I give the gun a good cleaning after use, I have not tried anything else.

Before throating and changing things, try a good polish job. Not just the feed ramp but also the chamber, especially the TOP of the chamber. I use a dremel with the cotton polish attachment and SemiChrome polish. Don't let it get to hot, and polish it to a mirror finish. Clean well and try your Hornady loads. I have seen many chambers with machine marks and various bullets catch on the top of the chambers.

May not fix it but worth a try and cost is cheap....

I had similar problems with Hornaday as well. Golded Saber 230 gr. and Federal HST 230 gr. ran like butter. I did polish my feed ramp as lthers described and it helped with some early hollow point issues, but the Hornaday never cycled consistently.
