I am in the market for my first handgun and I have researched 9mm pistols for a couple of weeks and decided I wanted either a SR9 or a Glock 19. I went to a gun show today and heard something that was very interesting. The dealer said he had just gotten two new SR9's in from the factory. One was a two-tone stainless with a serial number that had a 331 prefix and the other one was all black with a 330 prefix. He said the 331 prefix model had the poly handle but that he was told the 330 prefix model had a "steel handle" . He said the "steel handle" model costs a little more and it did appear to be a little heavier than the two-tone stainless model. Has anyone heard anything about there being two models of the SR9 for 2010?
bigfanofsr9, did you buy a two-tone stainless or black on black? I was only curious about the serial number because until yesterday, every SR9 I had seen had a 330 prefix. Thanks for you comment.
Phantom, I think you got some bad information from your dealer. All SR9s have a polymer lower frame (glass filled nylon) or "handles" as you call it. There are two models ... SR9 and the compact SR9C. Both come with stainless slides or blackened stainless slides. The larger SR9 is also available with an OD green lower frame.
When production gets to XXX-99999, the next prefix is used. This does not mean there has been a production change. Ruger has also been known to advance the prefix when there is a recall. In April of 2008, all SR9s were recalled for a trigger group modification but in this case, the prefix remained 330. Bottom line .... more than 100,000 SR9s have been made since they came out in 2008 so the prefix had to be advanced.
I bought my SR9 at the end of March and it has a 331 prefix. I belive any serial number below 330-30000 was in the recall group.
