SR 1911 1st round jams

I have a new SR1911 which shoots near perfection. Its the 5 inch barrel model, and very accurate. One beef I have is that when I try to rack the slide manually on the Ruger 7 round mags, they jam half the time on the 1st round only. Round two through 7 rack without a problem. The only way to get consistent chambering on the 1st round is by locking the slide back, inserting the mag and then hitting the slide release. The forced of the fully compressed spring seems to work on the 1st round all the time. I'm thinking that the mag springs are so tightly compressed, that only a fully compressed slide spring will force the 1st round into the chamber. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thank you,
Ian

Welcome.. It could be the way you are releasing the slide. I use an overhand technique, but the main thing is pull it all the way back & release it.
Don't try to do it slowly or release it easily, brink it all the way back & let it rip!

You might find some good examples on YouTube.

I have a different gun that won't rack a full mag...I fill it half full....rack a round in and continue filling the mag...mine is a sub compact 9mm

Check the alignment of the first round. The last round into the mag is tight and can canter off. If so it will not line up properly and it will not go into battery.

In other words if you put anything less than 7 it will work. That is because the first to feed it lined up because it is not overly tight.

Hope that helps.

Smile thanks for feedback

I think that the first round is definitely tight - but also figured out after looking at a couple of youtube videos that I was not racking it correctly. You really do have to slam it back with a push/pull technique and let it rip.

Thanks moakes58.

Welcome to the forum.

Glad you seem to have found the solution. Youtube can be a great resource.

I also use a SR1911. I have not experienced the 1st round issue. However, I do vigorously "slingshot" the slide all the way back to load the first round. Nothing gentle about it - do it vigorously and briskly. In fact, I never used the slide release. It sounds as though this is the technique you've since learned to use.

Also, as a suggestion, after loading the mag, try lightly tapping the back of the loaded mag against the palm of your other hand before inserting it. This "aligns" all of the rounds in the mag flush with the rear of the mag. This can promote better feeding. Sometimes, you can actually hear the rounds contacting the rear of the mag by doing this.
