Question SR9 Quality

I was just reading a thread about SR9 quality. One poster suggests that only the negative experiences get posted and there may indeed be many more positive ones. Lets find out.

If you have had issues with your SR9 please check all that apply.

Poll and post away and lets see what we get.

I had one failure to fire. The striker seemed to jam in the rearward position. Just a fluke, I guess.
Some slight peening which I took a file to.
Also, I got oil down into the mag release and it stuck open. My mistake. I cleaned that up and no problems since.

I trust my SR9; it's what I carry. I've put around 1500 rounds through it with only one failure. Not too shabby.

My wife bought me a SR9 for Christmas and it has been a great gun. Granted I have only put 70 rounds through it, it has been perfect and accurate. I read a lot of reviews on it before making my decision on the SR9, P-95, or the Glock 23. The most common complaint seemed to be the trigger which honestly feels pretty good to me. I wish I would have waited a little longer now that the SR9c is out. I wanted the SR9 to carry and thanks to the Crossbreed Supertuck holster, it virtually disappears even with my shirt tucked in. I have been carrying a Taurus PT-111, but the SR9 has kicked it out of the safe and into the hands of someone else. Thanks for starting this survey. Now we can really see where the SR9 stands (71.43% with no problems). Thanks, Steven

I've had my SR9 for a couple of years now. It was a pre-recall model when I bought it new. I had no problems with it before the recall and none since. It has over 1K thru it, mostly handloads with Rem 124 Gr JHP bullets. No failures of any kind and it's a pretty accurate little handgun. I'm not crazy about the trigger, but that's probably because I shoot too many 1911s. All in all, it's been a good little gun.

I'm not sure if this will be a very accurate poll. You have to think that people with SR9 problems are more inclined to get on the internet and search through ruger forums about problems. People who have had problems with the SR9 are probably more inclined to take the poll too. I know you aren't a Ruger employee trying to figure out the numbers, but I just thought I would add my 2 cents.

While this poll isn't looking all that bad I posted these similar ones on other forums a while back.

TheFiringLine Forums - View Poll Results

THR - View Poll Results

While I don't guess they are horrible there are enough people having problems that I think Ruger should do something about the peening issue.

BTW I didn't just come to this forum because of a SR9 issue. I came because I like Ruger and wanted to read about their products. I just don't think the SR9 is the best thing they have put out by any means.

As you can see I've been here over a year and this is only me second post. I mostly just look through the threads.

My wife helped Santa get me a new SR-9 for Christmas 2008. Has been a joy to own and shoot. No problems at all.

It may not be the most technically corret way to poll but it was only ment to be informal. Good point though.

I had a barrel peening issue that Ruger took care of quickly and at no cost to me.

I have a few thousand rounds thru mine with not a single problem.

I went to the range with a friend of mine and his SR9 seemed to fail to feed about every other round (using Monarch ammo). Suspecting ammo, I swapped him 50 WWB for 50 of his Monarchs. No issues on either gun. On closer look, it looked like his feed ramp needed some machine work. His SR9 is on the way back to Ruger.

Is barrel peening really a problem? Mine has some slight peening, but I haven't yet had any problems with it.

It becomes a problem eventually. Mine got bad enough that it would not fully load a round.

Never one problem here. In fact I think this is the best 9mm Ruger has ever made. I have bought Ruger all my life,... probably a few dozen pieces over the decades,... but, never one of their semi-auto pistol until the SR9 came out.

I just couldn't get past the bulkiness of the early models. Now, I am hot on the trail for a 345, hoping it is as reliable and ergonomically satisfying as the SR9.

I just but an SR9, its the only pistol I own and I am hoping it can be my first concealed carrry weapon (after becoming proficient and jumping through the hoops to get the permit). I just took it out and ran 200 rounds through it yesterday. I like the gun overall and due to it's fit to my hand I intend to make it work but it did start to stovepipe after about 100 rounds. I was using Federal 115grn FMJ that I picked up at a popular discount store.

I'll take any suggestions on what may be causing that or what ammo I should use. The friend who was with me (who has carried a Ruger P95) said that he didn't think I'd shot it enough that it would stovepipe due to fouling. Although he blew into the chamber and it stopped stovepiping for the rest of our shooting. I like the gun and am not sorry it's my first pistol but I am concerned.

My SR9 was fine except for the awful trigger...I traded it in on SR9c, which has a trigger that is like it's from another planet...not even related to the SR9.
The SR9c is lighter, smoother, and crisper and just better in general...maybe that design will find their way into the SR9...

Wasn't sure about this gun when I bought it. The trigger was heavy and I had read about the recall. I have about 1000 rounds down the barrel now, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The trigger smoothed out very nice, and never had a failure to feed. I just wish crimson trace would sell a grip for it, not for everyday use just for that bump in the night.

I like the SR9, but the QC just seems to spotty with rugers casting and fitting to pick one up. I didn't even mind the trigger or the fact thats its 9mm only.

Mine had the trigger fail to reset twice within the first two hundred rounds. I have over a thousand through it now and never had another issue.

I have had the following problems:

Barrel Penning - more than just slight

Bad trigger - I could learn to live with it, I'm used to 1911 triggers.

Trigger Reset - Trigger has not reset a few times

Weak ejection or failure to eject - This is my #1 complaint

Stiff recoil spring - I can live with this

Ammo sensitivity - Especially with the lower priced ball ammo, this is my #2 complaint, it should eat whatever I feed it.

On the good side:

I love the ergonomics and capacity and I'm very hopeful that my gun will return from Ruger in good enough condition to be used as a serious carry gun.

BTW - What is the turn-a-round time on getting one's gun back from Ruger?

On Monday, I shot 100 rounds of cheap Federal, and 100 rounds of Winchester white box through my SR9. I bought it as new two days prior. Not a single problem. Every time I pulled the trigger, it went boom, and loaded the next round. It was one of the fastest, funnest hours of my life

btw - this is my first gun purchase

I'v had almost every problem with the sr9 full size. It was a Nov 08 model so i had to order a new barrel from Ruger. Aside from that I fixed the trigger(and installed ghost after market), magazine release latch, removed the magazine disconnect, and polished it well enough to see my reflection.

For the last 300 rounds it has had 0 problems. I absolutely love the gun, and I probably should for the amount of work I have put into it to make it what it is.

Take what you want out of that.

I've had mine since they first came out, had the recall done, and haven't had any of the issue's that have been flying around the WEB. She is very accurate, magazines have loosened up so loading is easier, and my 12yr old son has adopted it as his. So I'm in the market for another along with the SR9c. I have no issue using this gun to protect my life!!!!

With only 200 rounds threw my sr9c it has had about 6 misfires due to stiker not hitting hard enough. Other than that I like it.

The original slide stop was very loose and would not hold the slide open on an empty magazine. Sent it to Ruger for repair and they replaced the barrel at the same time without even asking. That ought to tell you they knew something was wrong. It hadn't even been fired yet.

I recently bought a SR9 and had a few problems with it first couple of weeks. I was not impressed with the gun at all and was a little apprehensive of my purchase. After a few more weeks of owning the gun all the problems worked themselves out and I am now fairly impressed with the gun. I do not regret purchasing the gun now and am actually happy with my purchase.

No problems here, even after a couple thousand rounds. But I clean it after every outing. To me, it's a Glock that fixes the Glock problems (chamber not fully supporting the round, have to pull the trigger to get the slide off, gotta be extra careful w/ cast boolits, etc.). No failures to fire.

Mine was turned around is a week if I remember correctly. That was last September though.

Man I did notice my SR9 was tight brand new. They just need a good break in & cleaning. Mainly the verry first SR9's had most of the problomes. Mine has been flawless got it from Impact Guns last July.

Exclamation

Had my sr9 for maybe 2 mo. now. Have 250 rounds through it. Had 1 stovepipe with cheap ammo, slight barrel peening which is lightly polished after first 100 rounds and no more of an issue. My main concern is something that i'm sure no one has really noticed. The cup on the rear of the striker shaft. The spring puts constant tension on this cup, both the shaft and cup are plastic. The cup SHOULD NOT slide off the back. A pin needs removed on the front of the striker, the shaft pulled out and the spring taken off for the cup to be able to come off. What this does when the striker cup is cracked and can slide off the back is it stays engaged into the striker cover, which should easily slide down out of the slide but because the cup stays in the groove of the cover the cover cannot slide down without pushing in the cup in addition to the pin that holds the cover in place. I want to know who else has had this problem. It has happend 2x to me. I noticed it after the first 100 rounds wanting to clean the striker area and then after the next 150 rounds. Since the cup can slide off easily when the slide cycles it makes the striker more difficult to pull in while racking or firing the gun. My BIG worry is when a new round is loaded into the chamber the back edge of the bullet gets forcefully jammed up onto the striker tip and my worry is after awhile the striker will get disfigured and/or deformed. Anyone else notice this? This could easily be fixed if the striker shaft and cup were made of stainless metal.
