Ruger Model 96/22 Magnum

I've got the opportunity to buy a Ruger Model 96/22 magnum for $550. I've seen what they are going for online. Does anyone have any experience with the rifle (good or bad) that I need to know about before I purchase the gun? I'd greatly appreciate any input provided.

I have a 96/22mag. I shoot it often. It shoots well with most ammo but there are some that are only fairly accurate. Overall the gun is very accurate and very reliable. I've put well over 1000 rounds through mine with no functional problems. I keep it sighted in to be dead on at 100yds. It usually prints groups of .75 inch or smaller. Cloverleafs at 80yds. It has proven very useful for Jacks and P-Dogs at ranges under 125 yds. Yes, I keep a scope on it to be able to shoot this well. I once stepped out of my truck and into a badger hole while holding the rifle. The rifle went flying and landed on the rear ocular of the scope. This caused the scope mount threads in the reciever to strip. I did a little drilling and tapping and all is well again. It taught me that AL recievers have weak threads and to be careful with scopes mounted on these guns. Unfortunately we don't always see the badger holes that come into our lives. Hope this helps.

Ruger 96

My 96, a 22 mag would miss fire about once in every 10 shots with three different ammon brands. I sent it back to Ruger where they changed several components including the barrel. Upon return, the reciever had severe vice jaw marks on it and the rifle still miss fired about once in every 15 or 20 shots. I ended up returning the rifle, to where I bought it, replacing it with a 77/22 mag.
This has been my only bad experience with Ruger and I probably should have addressed the issue further with them but, by that time, I had lost all desire to own a 96.
Hopefully that issue with the 96 was an exception.

I have a 96/22M , serial # 00057. I put a Leupold VXII 2x7 on it & I would not trade it for any lever made...............period. I am shooting Rem 30 gr poly tips and 5 shots will clover leaf at 100 yds. The action is butter smooth and the trigger is OK........not wonderful but OK.

Yes..........I like Rugers and this one is no exception. Condition is important at $550. It needs to be 98% at that number, but they are no longer made so it could be collectible one day. I enjoy mine as a good looking shooter. It has a history as well, since it was sent to John Wooters by Bill Ruger as a promotion firearm so Wooters could write a promo piece in one of the many outdoor/shooting mags he wrote for. I am certain it got a good writeup.
