A lever action story/scam or???

Twice guys I have came across a for sale add online that's to good to be true!! Both basically the same thing just two different rifles but same caliber. Today I found a Winchester Modell 88 lever action .243 with a Tasco scope for $350.00 yeah right to good to be true. This rifle appeared in the pictures very nice. I would think in reality even though the scope not worth much the appearance of the rifle, stock, bluing this rifle easy $800.00 plus. The other rifle a Savage Model 99 .243 $250.00. Now my situation I am 100 miles away, the Savage I offered right away 100.00 above asking price. But of course well someone is coming over to look at this rifle in a few minutes. Well my mistake I asked if the Winchester Model 88 was still for sale I should have told the so called seller I would give $500.00 cash if he could wait until tomorrow. But no I opened my mouth & inserted my foot.....or did I??? When the seller said the rifle was for sale & said the famous enough words someone is looking at it tonight, my first response was I guess you know thus rifle is easily worth $1200-$1500.00 then no response other then from me well I guess you must need the cash. Then he hung up.So here are my thoughts maybe the seller wanted to meet in a parking lot then when meeting club the hell out of the buyer steal cash car & any money?? Comments welcomed!!!

There has been several incidents where the buyer was robbed while meeting for a gun sale. Several reports I have seen concerning items listed on Craig's list. Beware and be safe.

Also could have been stolen and the guy didn't have a clue and just wanted to dump it and run.

Could have been a piece of junk too. I always disassemble any weapon before I buy it, new or old.

Remember, you can always put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

Well anyone who knows guns would have figured something fishy you don't see these two rifles even used under $500.00 both are not made anymore thus their value goes up. Yea the rifle might have been stolen.

our local PD supports and permits this in their parking lot. its a "safe commerce zone" with surveillance cameras, and obviously nearly immediate assistance if needed.

as for gun sales, might be a good idea to advise the PD of when you are meeting and why.

Well when I called the seller was 100 miles away it was late afternoon I didn't want to drive that far in crappy weather etc. I should have offered up front more $$ & asked if he would hold it for me. No matter now I have bought lots of firearms used and never a problem I always make sure to exchange CCP ID's to see etc write up a bill of sale and a copy.

Police station is a good place to meet, never thought of that. I have a buddy who owns a gunshop, would be another good place to do business and meet, if it's possible for you.

I, too see these ads, great priced guns. Usually the picture looks like it's taken on a motel bed, haha. I never got curious enough. I bought online a used gun once, was a Franchi shotty. Would eject half the time, turns out the ejecter plunger was missing. Know how hard of a part that is to come by.....? Any ways, since then, I only buy used from a shop, because they worry about their name/reputation. People on the street dont. It's worth the few extra bucks to me, to return to someone that is responsible. Support local businesses!!!! Do it enough and you'd be amazed at the deals they'll get you.
