Shortening barrel on SRH

I am asking advice from anyone who has had this done.
Here is my goal. I like the SRH, but the 7.5 inch barrel makes it a bit hard to carry when fishing hiking etc.. The Alaskan is too short and I believe I would loose more FPS than I care to give up.
I have looked at the S&W mountain guns in 44 mag with the 4 inch bbl. I would rather have a Ruger in 454 so I can also shoot 45 LC.
My idea would be to have a 4 to 5 inch barrel on the SRH.
Thanks in advance

DILLIGAS, Before you whack, take a look at this chart for a 240 gr 44 Mag factory load and see how much velocity you can afford to give up. Here's the actual data:
3" = 1025 fps, 560 ft lbs
4" = 1182 fps, 745 ft lbs; 157 fps increase from 3", 185 ft lbs increase from 3"
5" = 1294 fps, 893 ft lbs; 112 fps increase from 4", 148 ft lbs increase from 4"
6" = 1380 fps, 1015 ft lbs; 86 fps increase from 5", 122 ft lbs increase from 5"
7" = 1450 fps, 1121 ft lbs; 70 fps increase from 6", 106 ft lbs increase from 6"
8" = 1500 fps, 1199 ft lbs; 50 fps increase from 7", 78 ft lbs increase from 7"

Thanks for the informative chart. I will rethink this and either cut none off or no more than 1.5 inches.
Had I bought an Alaskan and then seen this chart it would probably be going to the next gun show.

DILLIGAS, I have a Colt Anaconda with a 6" barrel. That seems to be about the minimum length for decent performance. I totally agree about the Alaskan ... here you are buying a bear gun that doesn't have near the power needed to do the job. What a sacrifice just to make it a little easier to carry.

Your chart and spot on advice saved me from wasting money and butchering a well designed revolver. I just made a paypal donation to this outstanding web site and still came out ahead.

Hmmmm... almost wish I'd seen those numbers before I bought my 4 5/8" SBH. It probably wouldn't have mattered anyway, though; I just love that length barrel, and can't seem to buy anything else.

balistics by the inch

Just thought I'd throw in a few cents. the fellows at
http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/44mag.html
show very similar losses going from 8" down to 3". Their method involves a contender barrel and a hacksaw.

Interesting stuff.
Cheers,

Even the "puny" Alaskan can do the job

No disrespect intended, but loaded with the right ammunition and wielded by a competent shooter in possession of a good amount of luck, the Alaskan is just fine, thank you very much.

3 shots fired. One probable miss, one apparantly in the paw and one that did the deed.

But I still prefer the 7.5" barrel.
