Old model SP101 22LR (4"/full under lug)

Hi,

I'm in the market for a 22LR revolver and went out looking today. I went to a few shops to get a fell for whats out there locally. In one of them, I came across an older model SP101 22LR/six shot/full under lug revolver.

I was temped because I currently own a SP101 .357 that I carry daily and thought it would make a nice companion gun. Thing is, they wanted about as much as a brand new Taurus/Charter arms 22lr revolver (M94/pathfinder). Also, I didn't know if the older models had any quirks that I need to know about.

I wanted to come home and do some research to see if the old models were good, or did they have problems? Also,I stopped by the shop without telling my wife.. so I stepped back before spending money, lol. What do you think. Should I go back tomorrow and still see if they still have it and plunk my money down? Or, should I pass and look into a brand new gun, for the same price, from a different manufacturer?

Thoughts?

PS, wife gave the green light to buying a 22lr revolver

Even though I personally do not have one of these, I can say that my friends has always performed great. Even though I do not really need another 22LR revolver, I actually want one of these myself. I have a couple Single Sixes and a Mark II but have always wanted the SP101 model. How much is the revolver? For your sake, I hope you can still get this pistol, I'm sure it will not last long.

I think the tag was around $400 on it.

I decided to go down there tomorrow when they open and see if it is there still. If it is, we'll talk business. If it is not there, then.. well I'll go from there, lol.

If the gun is nice clean shape it's worth the $400.00 much better gun then the Taurus or Charter Arms!

I have one of these I bought probably 15 years ago, new. I think it was about $400 at the time, so unless it's damaged it sounds like a good deal to me.

I used to shoot silhouette matches a few years back and this was my rimfire revolver for that. Both SA & DA trigger pulls were very heavy, so I replaced the springs with Wolfs and had an action job done on it, but not before I'd shot a bunch of matches with it. Now both trigger pulls are very nice.

This thing only has windage adjustment on the rear sight, but I can shoot the living heck out of it. I also have an old pre-Model 17 K-22 S&W with a 6" barrel, really proper sights, and the kind of trigger pull you would hope for from an old Smith from back in the day. Still, I could never shoot that Smith as well as I could shoot that little Ruger with its heavy trigger and half-adjustable sights. Once during a match I knocked down 8 out of 10 100-meter Rams with that revolver. 4" barrel, iron sights, .22 LR. My friend Joe Duchene was spotting for me. I don't consider myself an especially great shot, so that was pretty good for me.

Personally, I would go back and get it. If I were given the option between that gun and a comparable Taurus or Charter then I would gladly pay double or triple for the Ruger to avoid the Taurus or Charter.....that's just me though

I'd be inclined to get it. The price sounds right and it's a great platform! Follow up after your trip!

Update.

It was still there, so............... I Bought it! I talked the price down some and got it for just shy of $400.

It is in really nice shape and locks up solid. I think it is a circa 1993. Doesnt look bad for a 20 year old piece.Just got to find some 22 lr for the range now. I'm happy

Pics.. cause it is the interwebs and all (I'm a horrible photographer, lol).

They had the original box, papers, bag and even the little plastic yellow thing that goes in the cylinder for shipping.

Some other shots.

Family photo with my 2.25" .357 carry.

Very nice, congratulations. How is the trigger? I'm curious how it compares to mine.

Thanks,

The trigger is very nice, very smooth. Feels a lot better then my 2.25"... a lot better. Then again, my 2.25" was new in July 2013, this one is 20+ years old. I looked up the serial number and it looks like it may be from 1990. There was an Oct. 1993 date written on the manual in pen (see pic), but from my quick search, it looks like 1990. So , possibly 23 years old.

Congrats! You did well. I've been wanting an SP101 22LR myself too. Hard to come by around here.

Great looking SP! It'd be interesting to shoot it side-by-side with the current SP101 and see how they do... Have fun!
