GP100 Project Gun

I've confessed here many times that I'm a sucker for a good deal on a GP100, especially a 4 inch model. I ended up with an "extra" stainless steel 4" GP100 that serials to 1989. The gun was in excellent mechanical condition but had picked up a few tiny pits in the surface somehow. What to do.....

After disassembling the gun down to the frame and empty trigger guard I reached into my tool box and grabbed a file.

The "Bill board" is gone!

Here it is side by side with another 1988 vintage GP100 so you can see what the barrel used to look like.

While I had the file out I decided to soften the edges and corners ala the Wiley Clapp version. I considered contouring the cylinder but decided that was pushing the limits of my abilities. I've never done this before so I'll keep it simple. The changes in the barrel are subtle but compared with the other gun I think the differences are apparent enough.

That's where I stand so far in this project. I have some bead blasting gear and media on its way and after some more smoothing and shaping I plan to bead blast the surface. I may polish the hammer and trigger for contrast (saw it done on a Gemini Customs gun and I'm a shameless copycat.) Open to ideas - sights? grip?

I plan to update the thread as things progress along.

Great job! I suppose the legal crap was not too deeply imbedded in the bbl? Would filing it off affect the strength of the bbl?

Good job Wave!

I have a new challenge for you.

I would love to see you make that into a half lug . I know it seems kinda scary, but I have no doubt you have skills to pull it off.

I love the softened edges on the under lug, gives it a sleeker look.

One thing I really want to do when the blue starts becoming an issue on my GP100 is the strip it and give the top strap edges a little sleeker look... right now they re just too sharp.

The rollmarks are really very shallow and disappear pretty fast. I wondered if I was going to have a flat side to the barrel that would require a lot of material removal to reshape but that was not the case. And it can't really affect barrel strength in any meaningful way. You can't tell by eye that any material has been removed from one side of the barrel. Gemini Customs offers this service in their options list for the GP100 or SP101. (I think they get $175 for removing the rollmark.) In fact, Gemini will go so far as to mill both sides of the barrel flat (which does look pretty cool) which removes way more material than just the rollmark.

Funny you should mention it - I had the same thought while holding the file in my hand and looking at the barrel. I could "see" just where the shape would emerge in front of the ejector rod housing. But I resisted the temptation this time around - quite a bit more work.

I think this one will get the Altamont grips with the fishscale inserts but I'm up in the air about sights. I have a lot of Hi-Viz front sights and a set of Williams Firesights (as you can see on the other GP100 in the photo) but I don't know that I want to do another light pipe. I had thought about the brass bead but they seem really hard to find. Tritium (XS or Meprolight)? Or keep it really simple and get a basic red ramp insert front?

I'm glad you mentioned these ideas. As I was pouring over your photos, I was thinking that'd it'd be cool if you did a home-made Wiley Clapp version. You have melted the edges and are going to bead-blast the steel (I can't wait to see that!). I like the idea of a gold bead (like the matte-blue WC) and the fish scale Altamont grips which aren't all that different from the WC's gripes. I think you have a sweet project here!

Thanks for doing this!
I've been thinking hard about putting a 6" blued GP under the file, I just need to get up the nerve.
