Redhawk Toklat

I just got wind of a new Redhawk in 454 with a 5.5" barrel. Couldn't find anything on Ruger's site but did see where one was sold on gunbroker for just shy of $1600. From what I can gather they seem to be a special run for Talo. They showed up in a military base exchange and sold out in a hurry. I understand they had 12. Can't find out much about it but did see a picture and it's like the 7 1/2 Super Redhawk with the scope cutouts and same backstrap and barrel set up. It's billed as an Alaskan Toklat. I've still yet to run across an Alaskan in 480 that came out the first of the year.

I just bought one the other day at the BX for $935.

I have the 7 1/2" Super Redhawk in .454 already and I really love both gun and the .454cartridge (I reload).

The Toklat with 5" barrel is just like the 7 1/2" model . . . EXCEPT . . . the barrel is slab sidded and the barrel crown is different.

My 7 1/2" rides in a Diamond D ( Diamond D Custom Leather ) Guides Choice Chest Holster and a lot of guys carry the 4 - 5" big bore revolvers in a chest holster also, but I like to hip carry my 4 to 5" guns.

I've not got to shoot it yet, but hope to in a day or two.

Today while out looking for some leather for it . . . I saw one in a LGS for $887. I'll probably go to Wasilla tomorrow to see if Diamond D makes a hip holster for the Toklat.

I'll let you know how it handles after I get to the range on Wed or Thur.

Well, I went out last week and shot my new SRH Toklat. Whereas my Standard 7 “ is nose heavy . . . the 5” Toklat balances in the hand very nicely. It has the same great Hogue grips and points real naturally. The longer heavy barrel on the 7 ” SRH is supposed to have less felt recoil, but I personally couldn’t tell a lot of difference, and the shorter Toklat did not seem to be any more punishing in the recoil department than the Standard. It was definitely easier to acquire and hold it on target. I have a scope for the Standard SRH and will probably assign it hunting duties, while the Toklat will be a woods/river carry gun. Both guns have the Ruger milled-in scope mounts, so I think I’ll try it this week with a red dot. One of these days, I’ll chrono both guns and see what velocity is lost by loosing the 2 ” of barrel. I can’t compare it against a FA83 (because I don’t own one yet), but I really like the gun and give it 2 thumbs up . . .
