| 5 inch Security Six
The local pawn shop has a 5inch stainless Security Six for $350 or so. The information I had indicated that Ruger made 4 and 6 inch Security Six revolvers. It seems like a nice length for .357, maybe for woods carry. Is this a good price?

I've never seen a Security Six 357 with a 5 inch barrel. I haven't been able to find any information that they ever made them in that length.
I bought a 4 inch stainless Security Six earlier this year and I paid more than $350 for it. |

| Never heard of a 5" either, stated lengths are 2.75",4",6" lengths. Maybe it was a cut down 6 incher. It's an ok price depending on the mechanics and finish... |

I asked the clerk to measure it in front of me from the face of the cylinder.
It's tempting. I have two 686s and a 27-2. And a Vaquaro. I need another .357 like, well,...

The shop I bought my s6 from a couple of years ago kept referring mine as having a five inch barrel. It turned out they did know how to use a tape measure, mine was a six incher.
Some folks just don't seem to understand...............you measure from the cylinder side of the frame...............not the front of it! |

I went back to the pawn shop today and measured the barrel myself, starting at the cylinder. It is definitely a 5" Security Six, Serial Number 154-095xx. The barrel looks factory to me. If it was shortened, they did a factory-quality job, and in my opinion, it was not shortened. The rear sight is the Millett replacement. The front sight - not sure, looks like a factory job, but not the normal sight that would have a base integral with the barrel.

| Are you starting your measurement on the hammer end or barrel end of the cylinder?

The barrel really is 5 inches from the face (barrel end) of the cylinder to the end of the barrel. And it does look like a factory barrel. I think it is a factory 5 inch barrel. Other than that, it is just another nice Security Six. I am sure there is a story there. I found a few obscure references to a 5 inch barrel model. But it had to have been an awfully small run.
ETA: My internet search indicates that Ruger made small runs of 5 inch revolvers for contract bids for the RCMP but never got the contracts, and may have put them on the market. So it is possible that it is a factory barrel. And no I did not buy it. I turned a friend on to it. I just cant afford another .357 right now. Something about Canadian law and barrels needing to be over 4 inches.

Price seems little high... I bought my 4in blued in VG-Ex condition for $250 and right after that he got the same thing in SS for $275.
But then, he prices everything from cost up not retail down.

If that's a factory 5" Security Six you better scoop it up!!!! That would be a rare bird IF it's factory.
I can't get enough of the Sixes, I have almost 20 of them and I'm always looking for variations. If I had the money and saw a 5" I would tear my pants getting my wallet out.
