Value of the Security Six

Does anyone see these going up in value or is it just me? I never really thought of picking one up till someone offered to sell me one. When I looked into them I was surprised at what I found. No more 150 or 200 good revolvers, those good revolvers are around 400 plus dollars and then some The price for them seems to be going up...Who let the cat out of the bag on these firearms lol.

I'm with you. I recently became interested in the six series Rugers, a little late for low prices. These are my latest addiction.

The only high prices I have seen are usually on GA or GB ,the private sales seem to be within the usual price range. Then again most all the prices on GA and GB are always higher mostly from the dealers...

Even this guys price I thought was kind of high but its in real good shape. I may just buy it and see what happens to the price of these. They are great firearms for carry and finding one in good condition that you don't have to go on GB or GA for is getting hard. Well at least around here they are.

I pick up my S6 about a year and a half ago for $350, at the time I wasn't sure if that was a good price or not? After getting it home and doing a bit cleaning and a better once over. I found I had a revolver that was more of a closet queen then a shooter. It didn't look as if the gun was ever fired much, barely a turn line on the cylinder and the stocks/metal did not have a mark on them.
My turned out to be a dusty, dry as a bone(no oil at all) beauty.
Mine: 1982 model, stainless, .357 mag, 6" barrel, target stocks, red insert/front sight (factory) and accurate as he!!.

* I am so glad I got mine when I did.............can't beleave some of the prices they want for these now???

my local shop got two older rugers in, both stainless for $395+tax each. they look rough but lockup is good, someone put numbers on the side and under the top strap of both. didn't do a good job as they are hard to tell what they are, one has fixed sights the other adjustable. the shop owner won't budge on price either, say these things sell even at this price.

The prices for nice examples of Security Six and Speed Six revolvers (in local gun shops) have gone up, if you can find one at all.

I think this increase was in part due to there being a shortage of new Ruger and S&W revolvers, and a waiting list to get them (at least earlier this year).

And there seem to be quite a few collectors getting into the S6 models. They are very well made guns.

Yes, people have discovered them.

I was on a role for awhile, but now spring is starting dry up.

Part of the increase is due to the rise in interest in self defense and concealed carry, with 3" S&W K-frame .357's skyrocketing in price.

And so, the word got out that the 2 3/4" Six series guns were tougher than the S&W's and just as concealable, so prices on the 2 3/4" guns started to go up.

Also, the Ruger Six series is old enough that now they're "vintage" and vintage is starting to to be "cool" again, and also there's a rise in interest in revolvers.

You can still get beat up .38 Special security trade ins for $250 if you look hard enough, but they are getting harder and harder to find.

The gun market tends to be cyclic, and also volatile and often fueled by trends, fads, etc. With all the plastic crapola being cranked out these days by every manufacturer, a lot of people want "one of them old cop gun revolvers" and so prices on .357 Security, Service and Speed Sixes rises a little bit. Still, compare Ruger prices to the older Colt and S&W stuff, and the Rugers still seem like a bargain I balked at what some of the OM Blackhawks go for, but then, I checked out even some recent production Colt Model P prices, or even the US Firearms "repros" and the Rugers didn't seem that bad.

A lot of us remember when "Saving Private Ryan" came out and all the prices on WWII militaria and weapons went through the roof...and then the "Call of Duty" games came out shortly after......you couldn't touch a beater Garand for less than a $1,000 and it lasted almost a year until the craze died down.....at gun shows, it seemed that EVERYone wanted M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, 1903 Snipers, 1911's, etc. It's unfortunate that interest in our military history and WWII had to be fueled by movies and games, but hey, it's something And then "Enemy at the Gates" came out, and importers couldn't put together enough "fake 91/30 snipers" to meet demand, and a factory in Belorus was making repro PU scopes and mounts and Century and I.O. were slapping them on plain vanilla 91/30 repros and selling them for $700 as the "As seen in Enemy at the Gates" repro sniper rifles..........capitalism at it's finest, they sold a boatload of them. Many of which are no doubt collecting dust in closets or got re-sold shortly after the fad died down.

Prices for 4" .38 Special Service and Speed Sixes, for the most part, remain relatively low and I have been able to pick up quite a few very worn, but solid .38's in the $2-300 range over the past year or so. Even a relatively "rare" .38 Speed Six "low back" that I got for less than $250, because it had holster wear.....I thought I would be slugging it out on GunBroker for it, and there was little interest in it.

And, believe it or not but prices on S&W Model 10's and 64's are the lowest I've seen in over 10 years..........I started looking for S&W revolvers back in 2001 or so and that's the last time I have seen $200 trade-in Model 10's. When this current "batch" is gone, as in the massive re-import of the Australian PD trade in's and all the State Corrections trades.......prices will start to rise on these again.

No doubt about it they are going up. A few months ago I picked up S6 6" Bbl. blued, no box in 98+% for 300.00. I didn't bicker the price knowing there are getting hard to find and it was in real good condition. It shoots great so I'm happy with it.

I have seen very few ruger sec six or service six revolvers available in northern nj. Maybe they are more common in other parts of the country.

Yes, I've noticed them going up in price over the last couple of years. Two years ago was when I purchased both of my Security Sixes. I have'nt seen a $200 to $300 stainless Security Six in good condition here in Florida in a very long time. I just did a quick look on Armslist here in central Florida and there were two listed. One was a 4" stainless with a $460 price on it and the other was a 2-3/4" stainless with a $500. price on it or best reasonable offer. I usually see them around $400 to $450 here.

Most likely a PD trade in that someone buffed all the "character" out of The polish looks great, I would add a set of factory wood target grips and it will be a great looking gun.

Putting Pachmayr Grippers on these guns was VERY common for LE use, they just gave better control of the gun and also, wood grips don't last very long when the gun is carried daily and getting bashed off of door jams, car doors, etc. Guns like this were tools, and were used as such.
