New (to me) Service Six!

Just got my first but not last Security Six this week

It's a 150 series 2-3/4" fixed sight blue that is in near new condition. I can't wait to shoot her tomorrow!!! I have not fired a Security Six for 30 years but from what I remember I loved it.

I know that finding grips will be almost impossible but I'm actually thinking of modifying some Badgers or doing a Round Butt conversion. What I need is some help from you guys...I'm looking for a similar picture that shows either a series 150 frame with a series 151+ grip or a 150+ frame with a series 150 grip. What I'm looking for is the difference in the frames and possible modifications to the frame or grip. If I modify the frame at all I will send the gun back to Ruger for factory re-bluing

The Six series is the best DA .38-.357 revolver ever designed, except maybe for a close tie with the GP100

Beautiful gun! I can understand wanting different grips for regular use, but those pearl grips sure are pretty.

Congratulations on your new Six. Looks good!

I don't have a 150s model (wish I did), but I do have 3 150+ models. My older Six 152 grips were a little different. They were more rounded and wider on top. Here are some images of the 152 and 157 grips.

My other two Sixes are stainless. I had a local guy refinish this gun. Bead-blast and hot blued. It looks kind of glittery in these pictures, but it really turned out good and cost me $125.

I think I have the original style grips that fit your revolver....and they are pretty fresh looking.
Shoot me a pm if you are interested in acquiring them. :->

When they first made Six series model (150- s/n) they called them Security Six. In terms now they are called the low back frame model. When they redesigned the frame (post 150, 151 serial numbers, now called high back frames) the adjustable sight models were the Security Six, the fixed sight models became the Service Six (or Police Service Six) and the fixed sight round butt models became the Speed Six. There were all made in both blue and stainless in 2 3/4, 4, and 6 inch barrels (and other not as common barrel lengths). There are some high serial number (151-) low back Sixes out there and they are relatively rare.

You can find grips for the 150 serial numbers guns on Gunbroker and eBay and every now and then you can get a good deal on them. If you can get them for under $20-$25 that is considered a good price.

If you want the full monte of info for these guns and in fact all Ruger models, you should look into joining the Ruger Collectors Association (RCA) and subscribing to the Red Eagle News Exchange (RENE). RENE publishes a Reference of Ruger Firearms. It is the most complete and comprehensive book about Ruger firearms.

Thanks for the photos and replies. Did not make it to the range today so my next chance is Sunday. Doubt I will be changing the grips anytime soon; my girlfriend loves the "bling" factor and thinks the gun is for her...will see.

Very nice acquisition!

I agree with jaxrider14, it just plain looks great with the pearl grips.

Well I took the beauty out shooting today and bad news...the girlfriend wont let me have it back.

Damn this thing shoots great! shoots low at my point of aim more in the 6:00 position. Single action mode is great but double need some work. This gun has not had many rounds thru it and is stiff. I plan on polishing up the internal surfaces and installing a spring kit and shims.

We shot over 200 rounds thru her, 100 38 special & 100 light target .357 (4.7 gr TiteGroup & 158 gr SWC) with no real difference in the loads as far as recoil. I did shoot some hot 125 gr loads for kicks and there was a little more recoil but the flash was to die for. The guy in the next booth looked around the corner cause he thought something blew up!

Other than internal work I will change nothing on the gun. Wait, I will paint the front sight orange like I did on my GP100. The GF is so happy and comfortable shooting the Six that I will have to find one for me. Trust me loosing my first Security Six is much cheaper than buying a ring!
