Hi Charlie, welcome to the forum...
Yep, I waited forever for my Redhawk a couple of years ago... They wait until distributors order enough to justify the setup and production, according to the "rep" and a contact inside Ruger (New Hampshire). There is a program they call "Pony Express" which produces guns for individuals, when a marketing need or promotional need arises... They assembly a gun from parts available. Again that is when they can justify the expense of the effort. There is no actual manufacturing schedule which sets a "run" of guns at a particular time. It is played more closely than that, producing what is requested. If Wheel guns are hard to come by, it is because distributors are not asking for enough of them...
I have been looking for a GP100 and finally two showed up at the LGS. A blued one and a stainless. I ran down to check them out and saw a used one. This one was fired only a dozen or so times, carried for while and traded in on a plastic bottom feeder. I liked it as well as the new ones and saved a couple of hundred bucks.
I like the 4" Redhawk for your described need. I also like the Alaskan (a la 454 and 45 colt), if I needed something that robust. My GP100 is the go to hiking and camping arm, and the Redhawk is the piece we bring when in the sticks with the bears... Don't be too reticent to consider a slightly used 4" Ruger RH if one crosses your path.

| Redhawk 4"
I just ordered mine from Dam Road Gun Shop this morning! Thanks to this forum I'll have my Ruger Redhawk 4" in a few days. I've been looking for some time and had no luck in Oregon.
Thanks

Very Nice! You got yourself a fine hiking buddy.
I hope your autos don't believe in ethnic cleansing. That Redhawk is a little outnumbered.
You know this is only the beginning of your revolver addiction. You can scratch the itch, but it always returns.
The nice thing about buying a Ruger is you don't have to worry about over shooting. They are tough as heck, and they look good too. Congrats on a fine weapon.

That's why I bought a Redhawk, and for hiking, that's why I got the .44.

Now the .44 has a little brother! Man I hate it when that happens!
Ok, for real this time - no more guns for a while!

| That's some fine itch cream you got there. Congrats on the GP. That should satisfy for awhile, but just give it time.
I started with just one Ruger, an sp101, but I knew I had to apply more cream to prevent it from becoming a rash. |

Top is the RRH .44 and bottom is the GP100 .357.
To the untrained eye, they look very similar (big, shiney, black handle...). Sooo, as long as I only bring one out at a time, I only have to explain "one" new gun. That's the plan. Sometimes it's just better that way.
I want to put a more visible front site on the GP100. Thinking about HiViz. |

You're not making this any easier. I've always wanted a GP, but even more now.
Problem is I have no money.
Dang, why did Ruger have to make so many cool guns? |
