The Redhawk is a great gun. I've shot several animals with mine including whitetail from about 50 yards. I have the 5.5, but I wouldn't be afraid to use the 4" for hunting either. Some say it's too short for hunting, and some states won't allow a 4", but if you can hit good with it and it's permissible? Heck, I'd use it in a heart beat. I would rather pack a 4" over a 5.5" on a long hike. That being said there are advantages on both sides.

Yeah, I might have paid a little bit more, but I've been looking for some time now and didn't know if one would surface again any time soon. And, like I said, before Nov 6. Still paid a reasonable price and soon it will be mine! Quote: |
For personal protection against large animals, check out the heavy ammo from Buffalo Bore, Grizzley and Cor-Bon. I use both the Cor-Bon 305gr FFPN and the 280gr JSP. Either will do the job.
| jhooper, I'll check it out. I'm a novice when it comes to revolver center fire ammo. Thanks again for the good advice.

I agree with your "long hike" comment. That's what I got it for.

I am thinking that it would be a decent nightstand gun stoked with 44 Spl loads. My 4" really likes Skeeters load of 7.5 gr of Unique with a 240 gr cast SWC in the Spl. Last trip to the range I was shooting at 25 yds and that load was as good as my eyesight. I then shot some big boy loads which are always fun. I really like the revolver.

Charlie both of my Redhawks came with the Hogue Bantum grips and they work fine but I like to break mine down for clening each range visit and the Hogues were a real pain to remove. The 45 has the standard Redhawk grip found on the 7.5" Redhawks and the 44 grips are from Altamont. As far as load development, I'm way behind in finding a load they both like. I'll keep my search for the right load up and you keep your search for the 4.2 going. Ruger is bound to have a run soon.

As I posted earlier, I found one and ordered it last Friday thanks to a tip from jhooper. I'll have to see how stout the kick is with some heavier loads before I swap out the grips. Also, this will be primarily for rugged outdoor use - I wouldn't want to scratch up a pair of nice wooden grips. But if the recoil from heavier loads is manageable, I'll definately look into it. I've found that reports of massive recoil is often overstated on many guns. But, man, your guns look good with those wood grips!!

Have you taken a look at the Super Blackhawk Talo edition? Granted, it is single action but it does come with a 3.75" barrel. It is a very handy size. Could you really fire two rounds of .44 mag off quickly on target anyway with the double action?
I have a Talo and love mine!

I have a Talo and love mine! | They are great looking and handy for sure. I was thinking about it, but I noticed they are bringing out another Talo edition. It also has a 3.75" barrel but has a Bisley frame.

Well, I picked up the Redhawk DA 4" .44 mag from my LGS today (FFL transfer from Welcome to our website : The Marksman - Where the Professionals Train in WA). Ordered it on Friday and picked it up on Tuesday! This is a super nice weapon. I can't wait to take it to the range on Saturday!
It may be the photo, but the barrel in Ryker's picture looks a little bit shorter than 4.2".
Anyway, no more guns for me for a while.

Anyway, no more guns for me for a while. | Its 4.2" from forcing cone to crown ( I just measured using a very cheap tape measure and it shows 4" but my eyes may not be picking up that extra .2" just to check it out and see how close to the .2" is). I heard they made a 4.2" barrel so they can sell in Canada because they cant sell 4"???
The 44mag cylinder is a monster so may look a bit shorter than it is.
I've been eyeballing 20 rounds of Buffalo Bore 340 grain +P+ just to see how that works but I have to think it may speed up the "wear factor" considerably even though its built like a tank and practically new.

Regardless, it is truly a beautiful gun! Totally worth the $$ setback! And I got it before the election, too! (Phwew!) |
