| Front sight for SP101?
My eyes not being what they used to be, I have trouble at times seeing the front sight blade on my SP101 in certain lighting conditions (like indoor range). Had the same problem with my GP100 and replaced the stock blade with a Hi-Viz and that helped a lot. Any suggestions for a replacement? I know I could paint it with fingernail polish but I would rather just replace it. Anybody tried the Trijicon sight they make for the SP101? It's pricey (typical Trijicon$$) but I saw one online for $68.
Any ideas or shared experience appreciated. Tips on removal/installation also. Thanks!

from what i hear the Trijicon one is terrible. i have a Meprolight one that cost about $40. either way they are not pre-drilled so you have to do that yourself or have it done. there are several guided to install them online, but i don't have the links handy.
here's what i know:
you need a 1/16 punch. however, i needed to grind mine down a bit smaller to fit right.
punch out the roll pin and remove stock sight
clean out grove in BBL
clamp new sight in place and drill half way through using the BBL and existing hole as guide (1/16 drill bit), flip gun over and brill from other side to complete.
remove new sight and clean sight and BBL again.
apply loctite (some use red, some use blue. i used blue) and reinstall sight and roll pin.
wipe excess loctite off and let cure for a couple days.

Great info - thanks! Found the Meprolight on their website. How about in daylight? It's described as a night sight - is there visible color in daylight too?

here is a vid... he is calling his site a trijicon, but it looks like an XS. maybe trijicon changes their design in the past few years. either way, here you go. good luck. |

no. my Mep sight has no white dot/outline. if that's what you mean... if you are looking for something like a fiber optic or day/night sight, the Meprolight is not it.
i wish Trijicon would make their HD series for revolvers (which i have on my Glocks)... that have an orange (or yellow) ring around the tritium element

Great video - thanks! What's the issue with the Trijicon? Looks like it has a white ring around the tritium element which I would have guessed would be pretty decent for day or night use.

The pic you posted doesn't look like a Trijicon. It's an XS sight (the tritium vial is made by Trijicon, hence the stamp on top). Trijicon's actual SP101 sight looks just like the Meprolight (no white ring). XS offers both the Standard Dot and Big Dot for the SP101. XS Sight Systems - Sights |

actually, not to split hairs, but...
the trijicon looks more like the stock sight - where the highest point on the sight is at the front of the bbl, where as the meprolight is reversed - with the high point towards the shooter.
neither has a white outline, and from what i have heard the trijicon is way dimmer.

Trijicon (the tritium element is in the trough):
i personally dislike the XS sights... i don't like that they are round on top. that may work fine with the v notch "express" rear sight set up, but on a revolver it's a round peg in a square hole. for me anyhow.

I like to split hairs! Seriously, it's important enough to me to know what I'm really getting. Does Trijicon have the wrong photo of their RR14F on their website?

Here's a look at fiber optic and Meprolights on Sp101.
The mepro's NS I have do have a white ring, and a nice glow in the dark. Since fiber optics only concentrate available light, unless you have good overhead light at an indoor range, they won't help much.
The Mepros with the white ring offer the best of both worlds IMVHO. Meprolight Tru-Dot Front Sight Ruger SP101 Steel Blue Tritium Green

Great photos which helps a lot. I shoot the GP100 mainly outdoors or in decent light and the fiber optic works well. I definitely want a tritium with a white ring for my SP101. It's kinda funny - the Meprolight link shows a picture of a product without a white ring but your photo clearly shows a ring. Meanwhile the Trijicon site picture shows a ring but there may or may not be one.... hmmm...... I like the price of the Meprolight better. You think if I order one from Midway it will have the white ring?
