Ruger SP 101 DAO Hammer Wanted

Hey Boys,
My buddy and I are looking for a SPURLESS Ruger Sp101 Hammer. Do any of my breathren here know where I can score one. We need it like big time. I picked up a bobbed hammer for my speed six off Numrich gun Parts but cannot seem to locate one for his SP 101. He has both a 9mm SP101, and a .357 Mag He would like to convert both at some point. Please advise. Thanks!

I called Ruger about 2 years ago, asking if I could simply purchase a DAO hammer for my 2.25" SP101 in .357mag...and they responded that they would not simply sell me one but that I would have to send my gun to Ruger for 'repairs.' During the repair, they would fit the new DAO hammer to the gun and then go over the gun completely, prior to shipping it back! In response to my question, they responded that they would NOT include the original hammer in the return packaging with the gun...their reasoning was that a gun only needed one hammer! Overnight shipping included, I would looking at around $150...which was not an amount I was interested in spending!

I think they would have a rather large buyer's group if they would make the DAO hammer available on their website! I would have purchased one...my wife would have had one on her .38 version...a friend would have one for her .38 version...etc.

There is always the alternative to have a gunsmith convert it. All one must do is remove the hammer spur and the single action notch and you have the same thing. I imagine you want to retain the other hammer, also so this is not an alternative. Other than Numrich they do turn up at other websites. In the past I have seen them on ebay and Googled up one at a Massachussets gun shop.

Keep a thread alive in Classidfied. Your libal to get lucky and find a guy with a DAO SP looking to go DA-SA. Get the hammer assembly with dog and the trigger to exchange if possible. The dog is hand fitted to the hammer-trigger interface and should ensure a no problem swap.
Personally I'd just have a smith bob the hammer to minimal size leaving just enough to be able to do a SA cock if you ever needed to set up the high accuracy shot but still be a easy smooth draw.

SP101 Hammers do not always interchange. They often need fitting. I wanted to replace the MIM hammer in my 3" .357 and bought a parts kit that included a hammer. No go with that hammer. I tried swapping hammers from my other SP101 and again no go. A gun shop that I frequent got in a used SP101 and was going to let me exchange hammers as long as the MIM hammer would function in the used SP101. No problem with the MIM hammer in the used gun but another no go with their hammer from the used SP101 in my gun. Finally found another hammer and it did drop in with no problems. The most trouble free route is to bob your existing hammer. The next best option is to pull that hammer and send the revolver to Ruger for a replacement spurless hammer. Then you can have both hammer options. SP101 hammers when you can find them are usually in excess of $50.

Best Regards,
ADP3

I have seen this type of thread a few times and I think that the easiest way is to modify the existing hammer, just seems the way this thing goes unless you want to search pretty hard. I wish it was easier, I would have probably gotten a bobbed hammer just for the heck of it. If they sold a version of the gun with 2 hammers, that would be cool too

I am always looking for DAO spurless GP100 hammers, because, like was said Ruger has them but will not sell them as spare parts.

Normally, a DAO hammer will just drop in if you exchange the DA hammer dog from the factory hammer. I have swapped 3 forum members by sending them my spurred hammer, and receiving their DAO spurless hammer and we all kept the hammer dogs, and not one of us had an issue or had to fit a hammer. Ruger is not like S&W, there isn't a whole lot of fitting for the hammer and trigger.

But, I have had issues when swapping out DA Six series hammers and triggers, so yes, there may be fitting issues.

Ruger still sells the spurless hammer DAO SP101's so a good bet is to do what I do for the DAO GP100 hammers, find someone looking for a DA/SA hammer and do a trade. There's probably a guy out there who bought a used SP101 with the spurless hammer who wishes he could get a standard hammer..........

I still rather have a spare hammer and send it to Alan Harton to have him reduce-reshape it like this. You just might have to make that higher accuracy DA shot someday., I don't understand giving up the option..

My thanks to the owner of the gun in the picture.

Sorry, thought I made it clear that it's not my gun but one I admire very much. The owner is a member over at rugerforum.com, but I can't access the site right now. I'll find it-him tomorrow and you could ask him directly. I'd like to see a better view of the hammer myself.

Yes, a hammer spur "reshape" is also a good option. It allows emergency thumb cocking but also gets rid of a lot of the spur, so it doesn't catch on things as easily. The odds of needing an SA shot with a self defense revolver are low, but you never know.

I have been known to carry a lot of DAO revolvers for CC, but currently I carry my .38 SP101 which has a spurred DA/SA hammer. The action is heavy enough that I don't feel the hammer will accidently be cocked during carry and also I cannot be accused of having a "hair trigger" in this gun.

The spurless Speed Six hammers can also be thumb cocked.

The major reason for DAO self defense revolvers is mainly liability, Massad Ayoob is a huge proponent for DAO snub .38's, since he feels the infamous "cocked hammer" caused the accidently shot "troubled youth" nonsense that can be brought up by the prosecution can be avoided by a DAO revolver.

Then again, there are many 1911's carried by citizens every day in "cocked and locked" condition, as well as countless DA/SA autoloader pistols like CZ75's, etc. that are SA's after the first shot and allow hammer cocking........so I take the whole "cocked hammer" thing with a grain of salt.

The main reason I like DAO Ruger revolvers is honestly I think they look cool and I shoot mostly in DA anyway, when practicing with my self defense guns.

If I could afford to get one done just like it I would, except with a HiViz front sight..
