| sercurity six?
i checked with another local shop today, he has a sercurity six blue 4inch. it has what he called target wood grips. the blueing is worn from holster wear around the muzzle up the barrel, about the first inch of barrel is bare. lockup is good with just a little play, barrel is straight. i got him down to $300otd for it, is the price a good one? i would rate blueing about 60-70%, mechanics of cylinder lockup good with just a little play, trigger felt good. also i like rubber grips, are there any rubber grips i can get for it? the target wood grips are fine and are not cracked but i prefer rubber. he has a taurus 66 stainless with 6inch barrel that looks like new for the same price but the cylinder has quite a bit of play. i need to get a gun to carry as a woods, hiking and camping gun. i'm gonna get it tomorrow or monday and need a little help deciding. thanks

Without question, BUY THE RUGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I like the new GP100, but if I found a good Security to match my old 4" stainless, I'd buy it in a minute if it was in my price range.
And yes, you should be able to get a set of after market grips.
I like the set of Pachmayr Grippers that have been in place almost since the Security was new.
Keep em coming!

The Security Six is a strong gun that has been shown capable of long service and some have had ridiculous numbers of rounds fired through them and keep on ticking.
I recently bought a stainless steel 4" that is my pride and joy. $300 is a good price for the condition you describe. I will admit to paying a heck of a lot more for mine, although it is clearly a "low mileage" gun.
I think you will really like it.

I own a Police Service Six, which is a Security Six w/o adjustable sights, and it's a strong, accurate, portable revolver that has never failed me. It sounds like you have a bargain in your midst, and I'D jump on it, if I had the money.

i went today to check them out and will purchase one tomorrow, the ruger locks up tight and i mean tight with hammer down and trigger pulled but looks a bit rough. the taurus with trigger pulled and hammer down had quite a bit of play but not so to put the cylinder out of alignment. i used a light and all 7 cylinder holes lined up pefect with the firing pin centered, the movement of the cylinder seemed like alot but with the light it didn't show any of the cylinder at the forcing cone. one thing about the taurus too, when it was at rest and holding it by the grip if i shook my hand fast the cylinder would rattle. also he had a gp 100 357 mag blue 4inch 90% on the bluing and it was rock solid in everything i tried, however the barrel is slightly canted not much but a little. he wanted $350 for it. thanks

No gun should rattle the cylinder while shaking it. It is very worn or defective. On single action pistols I usually check cylinder movement with the pistol cocked but on double action I check cylinder play both ways (there usually is not much difference). Taurus is not a bad gun but I think Rugers are tougher and stronger (thus a price difference). Good luck on your purchase. By the way the Taurus model 66 is an almost exact copy of the S&W model 66 but not as good a gun.

I know that everybody/company throws a ringer once in awhile, but ------------
Went on a 4wheeler ride last year, and one of the friends riding with me pulled out his NEW Taurus .45/410 to show us and give it a try.
It almost instantly became non-functional, Totally.
Well Don is not to happy, so plans to take it back to the dealer.
He does so, and the dealer simply trades him out with another .45/410.
Don takes that NEW one out for a try and what do you know, first time out if it didn't also became non-functional.
That was the last of Don's Taurus firearms.
Have heard it said that the Taurus is a good gun once it comes back from being fixed by Taurus.
Guess I won't be headed out to buy any Taurus any time soon, as RUGER and I have a good relationship going back to about 1960.
Too old to change now and see no reason think about it.

300.00 for the condition you described isn't to bad. They aren't making them anymore and getting harder and harder to find. About a month ago I found a 6" blued Securiy Six with the original wood grips. No box just the gun. I'd grade it about 97+% and I gave 300.00. Face to face, no paper trail and I know where it came from.
Not to bash Taurus I wouldn't own another one on a bet. You know what you're getting in a Security Six.

I wouldn't be too excited about $300 for a 60-70% Six. If you have already worked him down to that then he isn't going to like the $225 I'd offer him for it. The way I look at it is add the cost of rebluing to the price and see if you like that price.

$300 OTD is a fair price for the Security Six you describe these days. I haven't seen one for less in a month of Sundays. As far as rubber grips try CDNN. They have several styles to choose from at good prices. There's a fixed shipping cost so if you can find more to order from them it helps spread that fee out. Ruger Grips
Best Regards,

A $300 Security Six, even if it had 0 blue left but was mechanically functional, wouldn't last 5 minutes at a gun show near me in PA.
I recently picked up a 4" "low back" Security Six for about $350 OTD and I think it was an awesome deal. There's a pic on another thread I started. I'm not worried about holster wear or "character" and I have plenty of worn looking Rugers. I don't plan to reblue or do anything to any of them, I just shoot and carry them as is and they will never fail me. My EDC is a .38 SP101 that looks like it was dragged across concrete, I got it for about $350 and I know when I pull that trigger, if God forbid I need it, it will fire. I would not put the same faith in my Taurus revolvers, those are just cheap toys to me.
Now, granted I own 3 Taurus revolvers now (just sold one) but there in NO WAY I would ever choose a Taurus over a Ruger.
I saw your post on the Taurus Armed forum, and even the Taurus nuts were telling you to buy the Ruger

Any price under $350 is a bargain for a six.

Bought a Police Service Six in 4'' stainless steel last year.Belonged to the son of a good friend who passed away a few years ago.Bought it because I wanted a memento from my friend and the price was right. As far as DA revolvers are concerned,I used to be a S&W guy. With this gun I discovered that it is:
A)as carryable as a K frame S&W
B)built like a tank
C)has got one of the tightest lock up I've ever seen in any DA revolvers
Because of that gun,I purchased a 5.5''Redhawk 41 Mag.Please tell me;am I becoming a Ruger addict?
Yes Old Fart,I'd buy it without any hesitation!
