security 6 or speed six?

i just found two guns at my local shop and would like help on if the price is good and how good are the guns? the sercurity 6 has a 2.75 inch barrel with adjustable sights and is $375 it looks like knickle but could be stainless. the speed six is fixed sight with 2.75 inch barrel and $375 too and its stainless or knickle. the guns have wood grips and show wear but i would rate them as a B in grade. that is the shop low dollar as he has them priced at $400 and said he would come down $25. thanks

The guns would be stainless not nickel and i would get the sec six not speed six as I like the adjustable sight better but than I like to shoot snubs at 75 yards.

If I was paying $375 I would go for the Speed Six, but I'm also very partial to fixed sight revolvers. Most people would go for the Security Six since adjustable sights seem to be more popular.

Those prices seem reasonable given that the guns are in good mechanical condition and only show normal cosmetic wear from use. 2 3/4" Ruger Sixes are desireable right now and worth a premium over the 4" and 6" models.

I recently paid $350 for a rough looking but solid 2 3/4" .357 stainless Speed Six and I was happy with that. Prices are going up for any Six but they seem to be higher for the short barrel models.

My days of picking up solid but holster worn and rust freckled blue 4" .38 Service Six security trade ins for $200 OTD are pretty much over......those prices are a memory now.

I have a Security Six and love it, but mine has a longer barrel. I like the adjustable sights, so that's probably the way I'd go, but you seem interested in the shorter version. Adjustable sights might not be as important with a short-barrel revolver?

BTW, mine is blued, in good condition and although its not for sale... I wouldn't take less than $375 for it. I just don't see them for sale very often - at least in my area.

They are basically the same gun. Go with whichever one you like best. I prefer a "snubbies" with fixed sights and round grip frames.

With a short barrel I'd pick the fixed sights as I just prefer them. I have a Service Six in 3" and with fixed sights it seems just right. But it really is only a matter of preference as otherwise the Security, Service and Speed Six are the same gun.

Wow! that is a tough decision! Man if you could get both you would be a very happy man .

If you can't get both and don't have one or the other....I would go with the one in the best condition. Either weapon is a fine choice.

O.F....are you going to carry it or put it in the night stand or will it be a range toy?

Decide your primary intended use, then buy accordingly. I bought a nice (B+ if you're grading) Speed Six, short bbl, in stainless several months ago to carry and because I wanted a
.357magnum. It's 1985 vintage with a series of numbers & letters electro-penciled on it in a couple of places.

It was apparently in a security company or armored car company's armory at one time and since I have a couple S&W Model 10's with armorer's markings on 'em, I was intrigued by this Speed Six, as well. It's a solid revolver and I think it was a deal at $400.

If you can get either for $375, I think you'd be crazy not to do so.

Get the one you like the best, I would get the fix sight, Ruger revolvers are getting rare and more expensive, that tells ya something about the quality and reputation.

either way you are getting a six at a fair price! You should handle them both, and get the one you like the best.

Since even 2008 when I started collecting and shooting Ruger DA revolvers, I have seen an increase in the prices on the used market.

I have been into revolvers, rifles and shooting in general since the early 90's, and even as a young shooter the Rugers like the Mini 14's, GP100's, etc. were just "blue collar" utility guns and seen as "off brands". Now, the tables have turned and there have always been those who knew Ruger DA's like the Six were superior in many ways to S&W and Colt. It's only now that S&W prices are driving some buyers over to our "Ruger world" and things are going up steadily.

Prices for the 3" S&W 65's and 13's are getting crazy, check these things out on Gunbroker. Holster buffed 65's going for $600+! 2.5" 66's are out of sight. This is also affecting the prices of the 2 3/4" Ruger DA's.

I've had a blue snubbie Speed-Six and a stainless 4 inch Security-Six. If I was given your choice, with both guns apparently being stainless, I'd go for the Speed-Six.

Adjustable sights aren't a big help on a snubbie, they can snag on clothing, and the larger grip on the Security-Six is not as good for carry either. Isn't concealed carry what a snub is for?

I'd go with the Speed Six.
I like fixed sights & round butt.

But either one would make a fine addition to any home decor.

i checked with another local shop today, he has a sercurity six blue 4inch. it has what he called target wood grips. the blueing is worn from holster wear around the muzzle up the barrel, about the first inch of barrel is bare. lockup is good with just a little play, barrel is straight. i got him down to $300otd for it, is the price a good one? i would rate blueing about 60-70%, mechanics of cylinder lockup good with just a little play, trigger felt good. also i like rubber grips, are there any rubber grips i can get for it? the target wood grips are fine and are not cracked but i prefer rubber. thanks

I'd say you're looking in the wrong place for a K-frame .357, then. You can find Model 19s starting around $425 all day long on Guns America. The 66s are higher but can be found for under $600.

As for the Speed vs Security six, it's coin toss. I'd offer him $675 for both:-)
