| Ruger SP101 shooting 38 Special & 357 Magnum (Video Inside)
Shooting some video at the range yesterday to demonstrate difference in muzzle flash on my Ruger SP101 3". Used 38special first and then jumped up to the 357 magnums.
Both were PMC Bronze:
38 Special 158Gr
357 Magnum 125Gr
The 357 really punched the palms with this smaller sized revolver, but is a complete BREEZE in my New Model Blackhawk. Later in the video you'll see me shooting 160GR HOT LOADS out of a new model Ruger Blackhawk.

Didn't see much muzzle FLASH, but could see a BIG difference in muzzle FLIP, especially when going from .38 Spl to .357 Mag in the SP-101.

The first round of the +P in the Black Hawk seemed mild, was that just appearance?

If you really want something that will kick...try Hornady's 140 Grain, FTX JHP...that'll kick you pretty good in an SP101! Or, their 158 Grain XTP JHP...better left to a GP100 or Blackhawk revolver!

I want something with real KICK to finish off my shooting range day. | I've always thought the 158 grain in .357 mag. was a nice balanced round while shooting the .357, in just about any revolver! I still have a few 180 grain Winchester Black Talon's from the early '90's...and really enjoyed that round...but I keep that around pretty much just for hunting purposes!
Anything larger than 125 - 140 grain in an SP101 tends to be just a bit much on recoil! I tend to keep the heavier loads in the heavier revolver!
If you want something heavy...try 240 or 300 grain Hornady XTP JHP's in .454 Casull through a Ruger Alaskan! That'll rock you pretty good! They're stoudt...but managable! |

I just bought the following HOT 357 Rounds:
1. DoubleTap Ammunitions 200Gr hard cast bullets (1300fps & 689ft-lbs of energy)
2. Buffalo Bore 125Gr JHC (1,700fps & 802 ft. lbs. of energy)
3. Buffalo Bore 180Gr Hard Cast (1,400fps 783 ft. lbs. of energy)
There will be a video of all three to come |

I treat my recoil addiction with my 460V, but if you really want to get a rush, buy a S&W 500 with the 4" barrel and some of those cannon rounds for it from Buffalo Bore. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Here's the link: Ruger SP101 & Ruger Blackhawk 357 magnum shooting 180gr hot loads - YouTube | Hold the gun more firmly with your arms and shoulders forward, leaning forward, in a weaver stance. You won't have as much muzzle rise. You also need a speed loader and need to learn to shoot in double action, it is much faster in a defensive situation.
If you shoot in single action, you need to use the opposite thumb to operate the hanmmer. It would be much faster.
