125's

I stayed with the SP 2" & Speed-Six 4" in 357

I love all Revolvers! The GP 100 is about as sturdy as it gets. If I could only grab one it would likely be my 3 inch GP 100!

The Perfect Revolver (in my opinion) is my 7 shot, unlfuted, 3", S&W 686 .357 Talo.

A close second is my sp101 the only thing that holds it back form being number 1 is the trigger.

I would say the GP100 is hard to beat. I like my Smiths but Rugers may a bit tougher in the durability department so I would say they win in all around use.

This is my pure "serious social encounters" gun, a 4" GP100 with Meprolight sights, Hogue Tamer grip and I dropped in a DAO hammer I got in a trade.

The gun was a Dept. of Energy security trade in, it came with a DA/SA hammer and some standard Hogue grips that had been worn down to ragged rubber. The gun has plenty of dings and scratches and makes an ideal "working gun".

It's not a target gun, or a "looker" but it's made to do a certain job and I have 100% faith in it that if I need it, it will work. I at least want most of my revolvers to look "cool" but this one I made purely for function.

I can carry it under a heavier shirt in an IWB holster, and keep it as an HD gun. As much as I love it, if I ever God forbid have to use it, I'm only out a $350 used GP100 and the $150 night sights if it gets taken into evidence by police and I have to wait decades to get it back. Unlike being out a $2,000 Colt Python or a vintage S&W 27 3.5".

Have a s/s GP100 4" and a blued 3" GP100 in 38 special (+P no sweat...and yes, it's a GP 100 and not something else)...Since I shoot Gold Dots in both GP's for s/defense I see little difference....they are both terrific and accurate.

The thread that just keeps on giving... The Canadian government made that choice for me, handgun barrels must be greater than 4 inches and hence my GP is 4.2". I'm going to pretend that means that after extensive research they decided that it was far superior to anything shorter . That way I can not feel so darn bad about not owning something in a 3". I love the looks of those short(er) barreled revolvers. Funny thing is, it's a.o.k to own a 9 inch barreled 12 gauge...'splain me that Canada!

Rivers...that's one of the nicest Smiths I've ever laid eyes on. Love those grips. Bet they feel terrific.

When I was looking for my first handgun back in the early 90s I handled a bunch but the one that felt best to me was the 4" GP100. Its still the only revolver I own and it is a great gun.

It's a fabulous gun, but a bit too much for those of us with slight builds. Hence, I chose his little brother (SP 101 with a 4" barrel). Didn't make much sense to choose a gun that was too difficult to control just to be macho.

I have the new sp101 4" also. If the sp101 had six shots instead of 5, I would sell the GP100.

Question for you better informed (than me) guys:
Do the Altamont (brand) wood inserts fit the factory Ruger grips (the ones with the wood panel inserts)?

They have a silver black wood insert that looks dynomite! I do not want to cough up the extra cash for both the inserts and the rubber grips....
thanks
