No.
Our "house gun" is a 4" GP-100 .357 mag. I carry an SP-101, my wife carries an LCR .357 (loaded with .38+p). But the one that's the most fun at the range is the 4 incher.

For me, the 4" GP100 is THE revolver to own and shoot. I also like the S&W 586/686. The 4" GP100 feels perfect for a 357 mag.

I love my 4' GP100, but it is the one with the fixed sights.

The Super Redhawk is far superior. It's not one of those peashooters that throws a tiny 125 grain bullet at 1400 FPS. Who would even notice that? You get your choice of the 2 1/2" snubnosed Alaskan all the way up to a monstrosity with a 9 1/2" barrel. 44 Magnum and 454 Casul give you the ability to shoot 300+ grain bullets, which really leave a mark on the target. You can still shoot 44 Special or 45 Colt (or even 45 ACP if you cut the cylinder for moonclips) for practice and fun. Nope...the GP100 is just too small to be useful. |

I like my GP better than any Smith I have shot. The balance is just right for me. The trigger is as good as I would know what to do with.
I consider myself to be a pretty good shot for a newbie and feel that with my Rugers, I will always be the weak link in shooting. I've shot a friends Taurus 22 magnum revolver and a Charter Arms 38 revolver, and with those think that the weak link was the gun and not me (mostly). I want guns where I am the limiting factor, not the gun.
All that to say.... +1 GP100 4" SS

Took the GP100 4" out today and was hitting empty shot shells at 10 yards. Absolutely love the gun! |

+1 to everything I've read in this thread. If it wasn't for my 4" fixed sight, I would have never bought my sp101 and gp 3".
BEST OVERALL HANDGUN IF ONE COULD ONLY OWN ONE.
(but the 3" is just perfect for CC)

Doesn't look like I'll get to find out at this rate. I've owned my security six over 23 years and I'm still waiting to wear it out before going to a GP100. Doesn't look like I'll make it...in this lifetime. |

From a huge Redhawk fan: NO, there is no better all-round revolver than the GP100. There are more expensive ones: Pythons, Anacondas and various S&Ws... There more pretty ones: Colt Python, nickel etc... There are easier to carry revolvers. But none better.
There I said it. Now I am going to sell the XD 9 and get the GP100. Indeed.

There is no better revolver than the GP100, but the Security-Service-Speed Six series is a close tie! With the SP101 too, but that's the best "compact" revolver!
A 4" GP100 cut for moonclips is probably the most versatile handgun you could own. You can also have them altered for 9mm-.38 Super but then .38 and .357 cases will "stick" in the chambers. A GP100 with a "dual" set of cylinders, one for 9x19, .38 Super etc. and the other for .357? Now that's a gun that can make use of pretty much any ammo you can find in the "9mm-.357" caliber class.
Even without moonclips, a .357 GP100 4" can fire the lightest .38's up to monster .357's. It's short enough to conceal but the barrel is long enough to make .357 viable for self defense.
Many people say their 3" GP100, 2 3/4" DA Six series or even their SP101 is the perfect "do all" revolver, so it's all subjective.
I had two Dan Wessons,I recently sold them both. I never fell in love with them and with a large collection of revolvers with barrel lengths from "snub" 2" to "target" 9", I had no need for the interchangeable barrels. I also didn't like how the cylinder can be manually spun out of lockup with not much effort while in full lockup. It's just me, lots of people love them and they are nice guns, just not my personal cup of tea. This is why we have choices! Then again, if I did find an nice DW Model 14 for a decent price I would get it, just to have one fixed sight Dan for my "fixed sight service revolver" collection.
