I have the 357 LCR and my wife shot it with 38s and wasnt thrilled. When I loaded up a full cylinder of 357s, she shot it once and said..."Thats it, Im done!" She likes my P95 9mm better, but when the LCR-22 came out, thats what she asked me to buy her. Now I know that a 22 for self defense is the worst choice, but I know she can handle it and would use it if she had to. This is not a carry weapon, but a bedroon gun. I hope and pray she never has to use it.

It's all about her comfort factor. If she does not like the caliber and it's side effects then I would demo different guns in different calibers. Find a range that rents guns and let her do some homework.

All I will add is my wife had trouble with the trigger pull of the sp101. Nothing more to add to the allready good amount of advice.
Have you considered an LCP?

I have the LCR .357 and the recoil is harsh but not such that I can't shoot it well. I have only had it for a couple of months and shot it three or four different times but I love it. I shoot .357 and.38 Special ammo at the range. I can't see why anyone would buy the .38 when the .357 isn't much more expensive, is only slightly heavier, and sounds so fully badass at the range. The last time I was at the range, there were two or three guys who came over to my friend while I was shooting my LCR and asked him what I was shooting. They couldn't believe the power coming out of a gun they could hardly see for my two hands holding it. Awesome gun. Get your wife the .357 and let her shoot .38s or .38 +Ps and then you can still take your man-friends to the range and put some real rounds through that puppy, too.

My wife shot 1 round of .38 (factory reload 158 gr semi wad cutter) out of my S&W mod 66, 4" and said no to any more.
I bought her a .327 SP101. She has shot .32 S&W longs and .32 H&R mags out of it.
I have been hoping that Ruger would make the LCR in .327.

Have you considered an LCP? | No interest in another .380, I have a TCP. After looking at both I think she is going to go with the hammer less gp101 in 357.

What if your wife shots the .357 mag. load. It is too strong a load for most women. There is nothing that a .38 +P LOAD WOULD NOT DO THAT A SRTONGER .357 MAG COULD not do. The kick on th .357 load is much, much more than the kick on the . 38+P load. Get her the .38+P, my wife can shoot this load with NO TROUBLE.

I will probably carry the 38+P in my LCR 357 although the recoil has not really been an issue with 357's

Go for the LCR .38spl+p. That should suffice for most real world SD situations. I'm not convinced that firing a .357mag from such a small gun will yield any meaningful benefits, considering the recoil, muzzle flash, etc. Also, the added 4 ounce weight of the .357 version can make a big difference in pocket carry.

My wife shot 38's out of my klcr, i just wanted her to know what to expect if she had to shoot it, and she was ok with that , i would be afraid to let her shoot the 357's, there very jumpy, especially with a delicate hold.
But my wife is not a fan of shooting really, though I make sure she know how, just in case. If your wife is a shooter, they may not bother her.

I have zero concerns with 38 special, either standard loads or +P. I think if you starting shooting some Speer or Hornady Critical Defense in self defense, you will diffuse the situation in a hurry.
I have a mid 80's S&W model 36 and although I have shot +P with no issues, the speed loaders sit full of standard 38 Hornady CD rounds.
Someone earlier posted about an SR-22. Tell you what, hitting someone with 8 or 10 .22 rounds is going to put someone down.

From what I have learned, the 357 round out of a snub nose has maybe an additional 100-200 fps over a 38+P. The 357 will have more flash, blast & recoil all of which add to lesser accuracy and speed on follow up shots. With that being said, I still would choose the 357 if I would only shoot 38+P just for the added strength. One man's opinion.

Yes, some say the heavier KLCR 357 is splendid for taming 38+P.
I never liked 158 gr. +Ps, and settled on the 110 gr. +P load for my LCR
in 38+P.
Light recoil with amazing accuracy, and little muzzle flash to boot!
The Remington 125 gr.+P load shoot harder but not as much recoil as the 158s.
Know that the Ruger was totally reliable and had less recoil than my old Model 642.
Those Tamer grips really helped!
I later went to the CT grips with a Hogue slip on.

Anyway I was wondering how bad the recoil is on the LCR .357? I saw it is a little heavier than the .38. My plan was to get her the .357 and have her start with full power loads and if that is too much for her then to work down from there. I am not a small guy and not very recoil sensitive so I don't think it would be a problem from me. I'm curious how many ladies on here have shot the .357 or how many guys have had their lady shoot it. |
I like the .357 model because it is all stainless not aluminum. For self defense the Speer GDSB 135gr JHP 38+p has an excellent track record. It depends on the shooter, but I have no issue one handed shooting my hand loaded hot .357 out of my LCR.
