| Missed one today!
I was watching a 44 Mag Alaskan on Auction Arms. I forgot about it this morning and it sold for $624 or so.

This thread has pushed me over the edge to get one when funds allow. Now do I find a .44 or .454?

Tech859,
If you handload, both calibers offer lots of choices for you.
The 44 can be loaded to modest plinking velocities as well as the 454.
If I had the 454,I probably would load a couple of rounds to full factory velocities then be totally cured of doing that again!!! Then it would be the equivelant of 45LC loads after that.
I am sure that what ever your choice, you will be plaesed with what you got.

There are a few .480 Redhawks on GB right now, and I was contemplating your idea of just cutting off the barrel, and having an instant Alaskan, but I'm going to just shoot what I've got for the moment.

For one, it'll be easier to find factory loaded ammunition, and probably .44 loading components, too. I bet this thing would be wicked with some .44 special loads. And I can keep the calibers I need to reload for to a minimum.

Well I finally had a chance to take it out and shoot it. I used factory loaded BVAC (Bitterroot Valley Ammunition Company) and Federal American Eagle loads. Both were 240gr semi-jacketed hollowpoints.
All I can say is: WOW! This thing has quite a bit if kick to it! I only shot about 15 AE rounds before my hand was tingling. Shot about 20 of the BVAC, as they were a little milder on recoil. I used to have a S&W 629 with a 6" barrel and recoil on that wasn't too bad, but the lack of barrel on the Alaskan makes for substantial recoil. I'm slowly getting into reloading, so I'll come up with some milder loads for it that will still be accurate.
At first, I was shooting low and left at 10 yards. Once I quit anticipating the recoil and covered to bullseye with the front sight, it was right on. Overall I am very pleased with this revolver and I don't think I'll ever sell it, even if I don't shoot it very often, which is what happened to the 629.

if anybody ever shot one they`ll have to have one...I have 2 10mm`s and a 480 7 1/2 and all them rolled into one still is not much fun as the Alaskan!
