3" GP100 night sights?

I have a 3" GP100 stainless (fixed rear sight / plastic front sight) that I would like to put night sights on. Midway has Meps for the 3" SP101, do you think these would work on a 3" GP100?

regards

I haven't used the Meps sight but I did put an XS big dot on my SP 101 and I'm very happy with it.

If I recall correctly the front sight on a SP-101 is 0.155" tall and the GP-100 is 0.185". XS or Express Sights makes a tritium in big and standard dot for the fixed sight 3" GP-100.

No...the Meprolight Tritium front night sights, made for the SP101, will NOT work on the GP100...the cut-out is different.

XS Sights makes Tritium front night sights in three (3) different heights for the GP100...so shoot it and know where it's hitting at 25'...and then talk with them about it and they'll help you get the right height Tritium night sight (there's actually a formula for that)!

XS Sight Systems - Home

They worked with me on my 4" GP100 in .357mag (see avatar) and they helped me get the right height, standard-dot, Tritium front night sight...it's 'dead on' accurate at 25'...on a rest, it'll cut the edges from the first hole!

Thanks all for the advice. I'll look in to the XS sights.

Just a heads up I contacted XS about a sight for my 3" GP100 and was told that they did not have a sight available for that gun. The sight that they offer is for the longer GP100 barrel and it appears to have different mounting option. The sight that looks like it would mount right is for the 101 so its the wrong height.

With XS Sights...use the S&W or SP101 sights...their base will fit the GP100! You're right that the longer barreled GP100's have a different mounting base. I have one of their S&W/SP101 sights on my avatar!

Hey KenP, did you go with the XS sights? If so, how do you like them?

I thought I was getting a 3" 686+ but apparently the dealer forgot about me so now I'm reconsidering my options. The only thing that I don't like about the 3" GP100 is the narrow selection of sights, but I only need one so if the XS units work then I may go for it.

No, not yet. I was too busy putting night sights on my 2.25 and 3" SP 101s. BTW, I went with Meprolights and love em. 3" GP100 sights next, just gotta quit buying other fun stuff.

I'll post up once I find my solution. The sight on the 3" GP is pinned just like all (as far as I can tell) current S&W revolvers, so that in itself shouldn't be an obstacle. A good gunsmith should be able to help me with any necessary modifications.

My worst fear is a night intrusion into our home. In that stress scenario I want to be able to quickly put a glow dot on Mr. Badguy.

Hey Amishman44, I saw your post in the thread titled 'GP100 Front Sight Compatibility'. One question on installation - Do you have to drill into the mounting base of the barrel? I'd like to keep any drilling or grinding to the sight itself.

Night sights are kind of pointless in my opinion. Crimson trace for night and fiber for daylight.

Amishman44,

Do you remember what size XS sight you bought? I have a fixed front sight 4" GP100 and have been wanting a night sight for it for some time.

Thank you, sir.

You will have to drill the base of the sight itself...it takes a 1/16" drill bit...and becareful NOT to scar the stainless steel...use a slower drill speed and clamp the barrel in a vice (use wood between the barrel and the vice) and drill slowely!

I usually follow this list when installing a fixed sight:
1.) Secure (clamp) the barrel in a vice.
2.) Carefully, tap the front sight pin from the revolver using a 1/16" punch + gunsmith hammer.
3.) Carefully remove the front sight from the revolver (wiggle it with a small pair of pliers covered in cloth if it's tight!)
4.) Clean the groove in the revolver with a bit of rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip and let dry.
5.) Apply a drop of 'Blue' Loktite into the barrel sight groove.
6.) Carefully press the new sight into the barrel groove, and clamp in place with a rubber-tipped clamp, making sure it's lined up correctly.
7.) After about an hour...carefully drill through the base of the new sight, following the factory-drilled holes in the barrel...using a 1/16" steel drill bit. (Drill slowly...low rpm speed!)
8.) Carefully, tap the original factory sight pin back into the revolver.
9.) Carefully, sand any rough edges remaining...using a very fine sandpaper.
10.) Wait 24 hours to shoot!

I've never had an issue following these steps for sight installation on a Ruger SP101 or Ruger GP100 Fixed-Sight revolver.

Meprolight makes an excellent 3-Dot Tritium night sight set for an adjustable sight GP100...installation is a matter of compressing the front sight spring with a 1/8" standard screwdriver or paperclip and unscrewing and re-screwing the rear sight in place...then simply adjust for windage and elevation!

I love lasers on guns...it gives me a great point of aim while defending myself! I'm not intimidated by a laser...I'll simply shoot into it!

Sorry...(and I know everyone has a difference of opinion here) but for a trained gun-sight user...a laser is too slow and you'll end up taking your eyes off of your target while 'walking' the laser onto the target! If it's a 'move-n-move' situation...a good shooter will prevail! Learn to use your sights...and not rely on fancy 'extra's!

Murphy's Law: Battery's can and will fail when needed most!
