Redhawk 45 Colt 4.2" barrel

Hello. First post. Weee. I am interested in the 45 Colt with the 4.2" barrel. I can't seem to find one to put my hands on. So for those that have one how does it feel? Balance good? How is the lockup and trigger? Any issues I should know about before I end up buying one sight unseen? Thanks.

Welcome aboard. I recently picked up a 4" Redhawk in .45 Colt and I dearly love it. Up until that point I had always preferred the 5 1/2" models. The .45 Colt is also more versatile than the .44 mag models. Here's a link that may interest you.

I like the 5 1/2" barrel better myself, but I think I'm in the minority.

45 apc option is out for me as I have a P90 for that. But looks like a cool option down the road. Did you have any issues with the throat or barrel diameters? How accuate is your 4"? Any heavy loads thru it?

More questions, sorry. How do you like the trigger? Any creep in SA?

The Ruger Red Hawk 45 Colt with a 4.2" barrel is still a BIG revolver. My Red Hawk locks up very tight and has a really nice double action trigger. You can load some very serious bad a-- loads for this Big Boy. I'm proably going to change the grips,I'm just not sure what grips to use in their place..I would HIGHLY recommend a 4.2" Ruger RH in 45 Colt..

Very nice pics. What makes you want a different grip? Does the exposed back strap cause issues? You talk about the DA trigger pull, how is the SA? Thanks.

Awards Showcase

If I ever save up and buy one it will wear Karl Nill grips.

Call me old school, I love the 45 Colt, but I like it in a Blackhawk SA 7.5" barrel for Javalina hunting. Although in February 2012 thinking about using my SRH 44 Mag 9.5" Barrel. I cannot justify a 4" barrel 45 Colt, I already have a S&W 625-5 45 ACP Revolver

Nill has some sweet looking grips. I got to think the rubber grip would tame the recoil better with hot and heavy loads, your thoughts?

cspringer, No issues with the grips at all. I might just change them to match the grips on my GP100. They are wood Houges with checkering and finger grooves.

I have a 4.0 inch model. Love it. I had the cylinder throats reamed by cylindersmith.com. I only shoot hardcast bullets from 250 up to 325 grain through it. I get very little to no leading.

The 4 inch barrel model balances really well. I also have a 5.5 inch 44M Redhawk which definitely feels heavier even though the difference is only a few ounces.

I like both the Pachmayr Presentation grips and the Uncle Mikes grips for heavy magnum loads (325grain 1275fps Buffalo Bore loads). For normal 250 grain 900 fps loads, any grip works.

The extra 1.5 inches of barrel on my 44 Mag means that I can get almost 1200 fps with a 240gr hardcast bullet using a max load of Universal powder. With the 4 inch 45LC, I cannot reach 1200 fps with a 250 grain hardcast bullet using Universal. I have to use H-110 or something similar.

I like the triggers on my Redhawks. I put in a Wolff spring kit on both of them to reduce the trigger pull and I only use Federal primers on my reloads. Some people are really hung up on trigger pull. I'm not. If you're obsessed with having a great SA trigger pull, get a Mountain Gun.

But if you get a Mountain Gun, you will not be shooting the 325 grain 1275 fps Buffalo Bore ammo through it. At least, not for long.

To be fair, If I could find a nice 45LC Mountain Gun, I'd buy it. They are about 10 ounces lighter than the Redhawk and there are some places where I don't need to carry the heavy magnum loads.

How hard is it to come by a 5.5" Redhawk in 45 Colt? I've never seen one on any of the auction sites.

I suppose I could get a 4.2", but I just love the look of a 5.5" Redhawk.

Very nice looking wood grips.

Thanks for all the input. As far as the trigger if it is better than my P90 in SA I will be ok. My old man found one for me, he should take delivery this Friday. The smith he found it thru should be able to ream the throats. If not I will send it off to be done. I really want to be able to use the 300+ gr cast. Any recommendations on where to find some in the WFN configuration? I justhave dont care for the SWC style. Should I be worried about the hardness? I have been reading some say to use 14-15 BH but most places sell them over 20 BH.
