Talk these days about Zombies and SHTF scenarios seems to push discussion toward high capacity autos and black rifles ("sport-utility") for the fire power etc. It also seems to be improving the whole lots accuracy, quality and innovation. And it is true that in a societal melt down fire power could be important. But even then, the simplicity and reliability of revolvers and simpler rifles would have an indispensable place among the people.
On my part, my XD 45, the 1911, and a few other respectable autos stand at the ready. But, I would grab the GP100 and the 1894 (.357) for the primary 24/7 duty in a disaster scenario.

I saw a local policeman carrying a 357 revolver as his duty weapon the other day. I asked him why when most all police carry autos. His reason was two-fold. First, he admitted that he was just a little old fashioned, although he didn't look over 35-40 years old. Second, he said he wanted the assurance of it going bang if he ever needed to use it. He said, that at the range, all the officers had problems with autos from time to time, but that he never had a problem. I asked about fewer rounds and he said that wasn't a concern. He carried 3 speedloaders and said that most shootings were proven to be very few rounds. By the way, this isn't in some backwater area but is in the DFW area.

Little surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet...
Dont go through ammo as fast! I do enjoy the more mild pace of fire-reload.

On the police, I really like the presence of a full size revolver on the hip. When I see police with modern lower profile autos, I have to look much harder just to see if they are armed.
I can be argued that this means nothing in a "situation", but it may put some "pacifying energy" in the air which could prevent a "situation". It might even cultivate a habit of respect among the more "gamey" characters who may be awaiting their opportunity.
Indeed. And the big bores have that big discouraging black hole...

My first duty issued handgun was the S&W Model 15 w/4" barrel. I could shoot that gun all day long and be in or near the center ring of the target. That was in the 80's. Then came along the wave of Transformation to semi-autos. We ended up with Ruger 9mm P-85's, followed up 2 years later by the P-90 .45. All through this my off-duty carry was a Ruger SP101 .357 I bought new when they hit the scene in 1989. This is still my favorite all-time gun, yes, a revolver. These days we have the choice of being issued a Sig Sauer, Glock or Ruger (I prefer the Ruger because it is what I have known and carried for the last 23 years). Off Duty I carry my newer SP101 model 5720, becuase at heart I always have and always will prefer a revolver for it's consistency, reliabilty and accuracy. I think the resursurgence of the popularity of the revolver is no fluke either. Shooters know what works best.

I shot my Vaquero (45 Colt) at the range. It is so nice to not have to chase brass everywhere.

BRASS! I had to scramble and grab my brass at an indoor range on Saturday when I used my XDc 45... I like autos but not as much as revolvers- that is for sure.

I carry my SP101 daily and the main reason for a revolver over a semi-auto is the caliber I chose. 327 Federal Magnum. Wicked little devil hit tis. And besides liking to shoot is not having to scrounge in the weeds for my empty brass for reloading.

My Sig P232 is one of the sweetest shooting guns I've ever fired, & I love my 1911-style autos so much it's practically indecent. That said, I rarely-but-ever-so-often experience an FTE or the like w/ autos. I have NEVER experienced a failure of ANY kind while firing a revolver, even my ancient & thoroughly crappy Nagant M1895. That's why I love my SP101, & why it's the last gun w/ which I'd ever willingly part.

I started my shooting life with a single action revolver .22 cal. After that I went to a .41 mag blackhawk , single six and other sa revolvers. When I got a job where I carried a pistol it was a P-89. I found that I thumb cocked it on pulling it out, in spite of what the instructor told me to do. I was the slowest DA shot on the course, when you have to drop the hammer with your thumb (no decocker on single action revolvers) then purposely pull a DA trigger it tends to slow that first shot down during DA fire drills. Still thumb the hammer though and get that first shot off as fast and usually more accurate than guys firing DA.
The reasons I prefer revolvers are:
-Magnum cartridges (Iknow I can buy an auto for mag cartridges, but I can buy a battery of mag revolvers for what a mag auto costs.)
-Reduced loads
-fast for first shot
-Hunting
And, while I do like the P series of Ruger autos, I am still more comfortable with a SA revolver than any other firearm.

Funny thing is anyone can pick up a revolver and shoot it. They are well balanced and very accurate. Revolvers seldom malfunction. I have semi-autos but they are plastic pocket pistols. A friend has a 10mm Glock that he thinks is just the cats meow. Neither of us are in great health. He has orthopaedic problems and I have respiratory problems and bulged discs in my back. It seems like the more he spends on the Glock the more I win off of him. I have a plain jane 6.5 inch blackhawk. The bore has been honed and nothing more.
I got him for $600 the first day he got the Glock. Then he got a 6" glock after $150 he quit with it. He just doesn't know how to shoot silhouettes. I paint them bright and shiny so it's not so easy to see them. Due to reflection the target appears to be much larger than it's actual size.
