Talking New LCR! What to shoot, what to shoot?

Decided to get an LCR... just because I liked it. Great trigger and I like the "futuristic" look.

Picked it up today and hope to hit the range this weekend.

I have quite a bit of .38Sp semi-wadcutters I shoot in my GP, but load up .357 for house duty.

I intend to carry the LCR a bit, and I know SWC do a pretty good job as a SD round.

I'm undecided about whether I should look for some JHP and perhaps get it in +P.

What ammo have those of you who carry this gun had success with?

Well, fortunately I've never had to actually *try out* SD ammo in a self-defense situation, and like the rest of us here, I hope I never, ever do.

Now, that said, for the range, I use two loads, one for marksmanship practice, and one for "SD" training. The marksmanship practice load is a light charge of Bullseye using a 105gr LSWC. The SD training load, which approximates my actual (and factory) SD ammo, is a 150gr LRNFP using a "38 +P" charge of, again, Bullseye (this powder works *really* well for .38 Spl and .357M). Both loads tend to do well in the LCR, but remember that this is a close-up gun. Actual SD use is probably going to be about 10-15 feet (3-5 yards) or less.

I have Hornady Critical defense rounds in mine now, I did buy some 38+p Golden Sabers. However last Sunday I fired some 158 +P+ semi wads out of mine and they worked fine. Carried those in my S&W 19 for years.

I will probably stick with the Hornady stuff for now. my LCR is the 357 version. Loved shooting it, my daughter tried it she liked it better than my chief's special.

LSWC's were the hot ticket in grandpa's day when bullet design was no more sophisticated than just a chunk of lead. But...today they are absolutely old school! Save them for punching nice crisp holes in paper.

There are so many new loads out there optimized for short barrels, minimum flash, designed to expand but still penetrate a reasonable distance without overpenetrateing....so why go back to the stone age? Shoot Hornaday Critical Defense when your life depends on it, and when indoors where penetrating through a wall will get an innocent killed, shoot Glaser Safety Slugs.

So, are any of the BGs shot back in granpa's day, less dead?

I do however see your point. I carry hornady stuff in my 357 but also practice with LSWCs of the same weight and loaded to the same velocity. Way cheaper than touching off the high priced rounds on a regular basis. (yes I do reload)

Hornady Critical Defense. I carry it in 9mm in my Sig P226 and LCP 380. It shoots and cycles very good for me. My dad carries it in his 357 S&W revolver. Never had and problems and very good groupings.

I have the 357 LCR also and for practice and carry I use a 125 gn. JHP over a healthy dose of 2400.

One of the best loads for short barrel revolvers is the Speer 38 Special +P 135 gr Short Barrel Load.

Any good 38 Hollow Point will do the job. I use 5 or 6 different brands and they all perform about the same. Now for the LCR… I think it is the best carry revolver of all time. Yes I even like it better than my Colts or S&W's. The trigger is amazing and the felt recoil is crazy soft from a 2 inch barreled light weight revolver. Yes I am a firm believer of the Ruger LCR. Nuff said!!!

Well since I started this thread 18 MONTHS ago, I figured I'd drop by a let you know I did settle on the Speer Gold Dot 135 Short Barrel.

But I'm not carrying the LCR anymore.

Why are you not carrying the LCR?
