What's with the SP101?

Why do people seem to love them so much? I've had a couple GP100's, but never an SP101. It just seems to me the extra round and extra weight of the GP100 would give it every advantage out there except for CCW, but yet it seems so many people are cult-like about the SP101. What gives?

+1 Yep... Not a rational thing... Can't exactly say why... Mysterious... First time I had one in my hand a sort of gentle charge went up my arm and into my head... Can't explain it very well in ordinary terms...

Mine fit my hand well, like the weight, great to carry, and my wife loves to shoot it too. Any gun that makes my wife enjoy shooting makes me like it that much more!

you can just as easily say "only one less round", cheaper, both size SPs come with fixed sights (unlike newer GPs), it's smaller, and it is hands down the coolest and most intimidating looking "snubby" out there. there are also virtually no other 3" smaller-framed revolvers out there.

plus, they are plenty heavy enough to shoot .357s all day long... why would you need more weight?

now, if we are talking open carry, i would definitely go with a GP... but not for the weight or extra round as much as for more to hold on to when drawing the gun, and if it is out in the open a full size revolver looks better.

I wanted to try an SP101.

Got a 2" model and liked it.

Shot it some. Everything was fine. No big deal.

Then last fall about this time, the owner of my favorite toy store said, "Take a look at this!" and handed me a used 3" SP101 that he had just received.

It was "love at first sight!" So cute! With Hogue rubber grips it just fit my hand.

After shooting it a bit, I realized it would do a "fair to good" job for every task one would expect from a revolver --- and in a "pocket pistol" size.

In the past, if a friend asked, "What should be my first revolver?" I would tell them to look at a 4" GP100 --- because a 4" GP100 will do a "fair to good" job at everything.

Now, if the friend simply wants a "fun" gun to shoot at the range, a CCW gun with authority(!), a night-stand gun, and something the grand kids will all be fighting over when you're gone --- get a 3" SP101.

I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. I was really planning on getting a semi auto 45 but when I saw this beautiful little thing in the case I just had to hold it. That is all it took to convince me. bought it the next day and that was last Wednesday!!!

Buckeye,
I'm not sure what the answer is with all the crooked barrels you hear about I am amazed of the cult like following. I am on 8th SP and have only one GP and when out shooting with family or friends The SP's are most always favored by young and old as well as seasoned or noobs, I don't know why , I never asked really , but I will.

My attraction back in 1992 was that it was the only .357 that fit in a J-frame envelope by a major manufacturer.

It has become the standard by which all my new gun purchases are measured. I went to a local gun show this morning and picked up a new holster for her. She is now riding comfortably on my hip in an IWB Done Hume leather beauty. A sweet rig and the perfect (for me) CCW setup.

The SP 101 is a sweet shooter. Finally took mine out two weeks ago. Sent a box of 38spls downrange. Every one hit with most inside 4" at 10yds and better at the closer targets. Best shots out of the passle of weapons that went to the range that day.
My son-in-law shoots semi-autos and this was his first time with a revolver. He was quite impressed and wants one now.
