Best ammo for 454 casull?

Now that I bought my Alaskan, I was wondering what kind of ammo most use in their 454 casull? With the ability to load +P rounds for 45 colt what good round would most of you use? It seems most of the 454 stuff is like 260 grain or average, a good colt load of 250 grains seems almost on par with it, especially alot cheaper. Wanted some of the 400 grain double tap but everyone is out of it. What do you all think?

What are you planning to do with the gun?

I plan on shooting the heck out of it. No hunting, thats what a rifle is for. But just to shoot and have fun with. Also maybe to have for home protection, I know thats what a shotgun is for. Just trying to get a little input on favorite loads from people. Thanks

I've got an Alaskan also (its one of my most favorite guns)... and I have to say that if your intention is to "shoot the heck out of it" then you might be happier with some .45 Colt loads (mild or wild). Its fun to shoot with full power .454 loads but you 'really' gotta want to pull the trigger on every one of those from that little gun. I shot 85 rounds in one trip to the range once, and that was way more than a fill on 'em! :-)

That being said, if you're looking for factory .454 ammo I really like the Winchester Platinum Tip ammo (if you can find it), and I like the Federal load that uses the 250gr Barnes bullet. Magtech has JSP and FMJ loads that are on the 'cheaper' end to shoot.

I've got a bunch of Winchester Dual Bond ammo and while I really like the concept, I've found that their performance is a bit disappointing. The outer jacket (the one with the "Black Talon-like" petals) completely separates from the core with some regularity even though its supposed to be 'bonded'.

The Double Tap ammo would be good too (though I've not shot any in this caliber).

If you handload, then the sky is the limit.

Good luck!

I like the one gglass mentioned, but my favorite ammo is Corbon. Great pistol I love mine. anywhere from mild cowboy to wild 454! 45LC on the range is pure fun. 454 on the range is pure fun in a sadistic sort of way
I have a hog hunt scheduled for the end of November, and the Alaskan will take the first hog (I hope). Again, I'm a Corbon fan and they have some good rounds in 45LC and 454 but those would be for HD and hunting, not really for the range unless your loaded!

Take a look at Buffalo Bore ammo if you want some hot stuff.
