Redhawk 45 Colt

Just picked up a Redhawk in 45 Colt last week (Model 5027)...only have about 30 or so rounds fired so far but really like it!

Accuracy was decent, palm sized group off-hand at 20 yards. Still need to slug the throats and figure if any work needs to be done. Loads were 255 grain SWC over 8.5 grains of Unique. Also, need to order some more bullets...any preferences out there for Montana bullets vs Missouri bullets vs Oregon Trail? Those are the three I keep coming back to.

Overall really impressed with the Redhawk and looking forward to spending more time with it.

With my colt clones. 6.5 grains of unique under an Oregon trail, 225 or 255 seems to be extremely accurate. Not a power house load, but accurate and easy shooting

nice gun. My favorite 45 colt load that my redhawk and blackhawk love is 9 grains of unique with a 300 grain swc. Heavier than needed for paper punching but really accurate out to 90 yards or so most my 60 year old eyes can see open sights to.

The throats on mine needed to be reamed, but that gun's forte is "Ruger-only" loads, so jacketed bullets would usually be the better choice, leaving the throats as-is. Leave the lead for a cowboy gun or Blackhawk. For mild loads, you can just shoot plated for some cost savings.

Lately I have been getting my cast and plated bullets from Xtreme but most of my jacketed are Hornady XTPs. Have done a lot of business with Missouri.

Im planning on running mostly lead, either 255 SWC or pushing the RCBS 270 SAA bullet, hence wanting to check the throats.

Still a newbie hear and haven't figured out pics yet.

Thanks!

I've had great results loading Oregon Trail in .38/.357 and .45acp reloads. I've been happy with Missouri Bullet Co.'s projectiles when loading for my Vaqueros in .45Colt. I use Unique also and think MBC's softer (lower BHN) lead slugs are perfect for mid-level .45Colt loads.

Congrats on the Redhawk. I replaced the Bantam grips on mine with grips from the original Redhawks. I'm also a big fan of Xtreme bullets and for range use I use them exclusively. These little 4.2 barrels are good shooters and balance is good.

My 5.5" needed the throats reemed, if for nothing more than consistancy. I have been playing with Penn Bullets 270gr Thunderhead and 8 to 9 gr. Unique. I LIKE it. I've shot deer, hogs, coyotes and a squirrel with it. Mostly for hunting, I put a gold bead front and a One Ragged Hole rear peep on it. I can bang a coffee can around on the 100 yd. berm pretty well with it.

Mic your cylinder throats. Shoot big bullets. Thump Em!
