Problems getting to single action

Hi folks out there, Please be nice, I'm from Massachusetts BUT repeat BUT I'm a conservatives and VERY PRO-GUN! I just purchased a Ruger SP101, .357 with a 3"bbl. In double action it works great But trying to go into single action, it takes two men and a boy to cock the revolver hammer back.

Is it new or used?

Welcome to the forum.

If its new, then some oil and break in will lighten things up.

The last NEW SP101 I bought had a pretty gritty feel to the trigger. Saturating it with oil and dry firing a couple hundred times with a piece of cloth stuffed in front of the hammer to absorb the impact fixed it up.

If its used, you may want to see a knowledgeable gunsmith for a trigger job.

Welcome from New Jersey. how is the double action pull. If it is okay dry fire it a few thousand times to see if things improve.

Usually it's just the opposite and should be. DA should have a heavier trigger pull than SA since you're not forcing the hammer into position. Try dry firing (no ammo in cylinder) in both SA & DA 100+ times to see if the trigger pull eases. You may have some machining burs and sharp edges that need smoothing and break in. If that doesn't cure your problem then contact Ruger about your problem and send it it back for correction under warranty.

If that's a new gun, something is wrong and I would send it back. Ruger's customer service is top notch. Contact them and they will walk you through the process. Under federal law a gun owner can send a gun to a manufacturer for repair and the manufacturer can send it directly back to the owner. There are restrictions on the shipping method (usually overnight delivery with tracking and insurance) and you have to be able to accept it when it comes back. UPS, FedEx, etc. will not leave it on your doorstep. You can also accomplish that via your FFL but he's going to do the same thing and probably charge you for the effort.

And WELCOME from Virginia !!

Massachusetts, outside of the politics & taxes, is a great place !

Thanks all for all the responses. The revolver is brand new. I have been working it with snap caps. I am thinking of replacing the mainspring (hammer strut) after consulting with a rep at customer service.

If you cannot easily cock the hammer and place that gun in SA, something is wrong. I wouldn't spend money on replacement parts at this point because if you do end up sending it back, Ruger will replace all non factory parts with new Ruger parts.

Get it fixed first before you start doing things like changing springs.

Had the same problem on my SP and it has a burr. Strip it and sand off the burr(s). The other option is to dry fire it.
