Have a chance to get a NIB Securtiy Six for $500. yes..no?

I have a chance to get a NIB Stainless Security six 6" for $500

Back story .

I have been looking for a decent 6" revolver that can handle running .357's through it on a regular basis. I have been looking a bunch of used better built revolvers and some of the cheaper newer revolvers. I have had good luck with Rugers in the past so I have been looking at the used gp100 market (Slim pickens) and the Security six's.

One came up locally through a friend . Its a square butt Security six in stainless with 6" barrel. It is new in box and I am unsure of age. He wants $500 and is pretty firm on it. It's over my Budget but I think I can swing it for something that should be pretty stout.

I really want something that is going to hold up. A new Gp100 in stainless is really out of my budget.

What say you? yes....no?

I bought one in equal condition – minus the box – a few months ago. I really like them and would also suggest that you buy it; but be forewarned - the spare parts supply for them is basically gone. Ruger no longer supports them and if you were to break a part like say a pawl/hand, it may be very difficult to replace. The chances of breakage are unlikely – but I have a (NIB) Ruger Old Army that is currently INOP because I took it out of storage one day and tried to cock the hammer and something snapped inside and it froze up.

As Hunter49 has said yes look it over, I had a Security Six Blued 6 inch years ago. I loved this gun it did everything I asked of it. Not as heavy of a frame as a Ruger GP100 but heavier then a S&W K frame. I wouldn't be feeding it a continuous diet of full house .357 Magnum but mix it up with .38 Specials as well. My GP100 WC I shoot once in awhile .357 Magnum my reloads and the .38Special +p. Is $500.00 a fair price if this revolver is honestly NIB........Yes its worth $500.00 easily maybe more. I would buy this gun in a heart beat if its as described with no hesitation at all!!! Good Luck to you!!! I was also going to warn you about spare parts, but then if Ruger cannot repair it they will give you a great deal on a new gun. If you treat if decently like not a steady diet of hot .357 Magnum loads this gun should last your lifetime!!

I'd go for it. Unless you flat out abuse it, I don't think you'll ever have to worry about it breaking.

The price on quality steel revolvers isn't coming down. Get it while you can. The Security Six is an accurate, good looking, and durable revolver. Welcome to the forum and be sure to post pics of the new/ old gun.

The gun is a good selection, but your expectation is unrealistic. NO gun holds up forever if fired really frequently with full .357 ammo.

The .357 and other Magnum rounds are NOT "range" cartridges. They are killing ammo, to be fired occasionally for continued familiarity, and otherwise fired for hunting and defense.

The stainless six-inch Sec-Six is a great gun for the trail where it offers a lot of power & accuracy for weight. It's a good defense gun. With .38 ammo, it's a good target gun.

Even a GP-100 will suffer if fired enough with .357's, especially the hot 125 grain loads.

Did you see the pic here awhile back of a GP that some guy shot a lot with handloads that maxed out powder charges for 125 grain bullets? The forcing cone looked awful.

You see this trite drivel on the Net that Rugers are built like tanks. Well, even a tank can be knocked out...

I do feel that a Sec-Six will outlast even a S&W M-27 before needing repairs, let alone a K-frame S&W .357. But keep shooting with full loads and you will need repairs.

I have the same gun.......................would not sell in for any price!
Prices are going up not down, so $500 bucks for "new in the box" might be a great deal?
