Sp101 .38 only

I have a chance to buy a very nice very lightly used SP101, blue, snubbie, .38 Special only, for $200.... I've already got a spurless stainless 101, .357, so don't really NEED it.... I'm really torn on spending the money that I am saving up for a new Canik, but kinda hate to pass it up. Woe, is me!

Gosh, I hate decisions like this!

Blued SP101? I'd be curious. Never seen one unless it's not done at factory. The price would have me guessing why it's so low?

I didn't know they offered the SP101 in other than stainless...Other than a Talo in in Black Cerakote. For that price...Buy it and flip it.

What's to think about? Lightly used, SP101 in .38, blued, for only $200?
I would certainly buy it. Check it out well, make sure there's nothing wrong with it.

Be interesting to see a picture. First I have heard of a blued SP101; there are blue GP100s. Have a hunch it is coated. Blueing stainless successfully is difficult.

Buy it, try it, and if you don't fall in love you can sell it later to fund your Canik.

Tough to go wrong for only $200 if it is an SP, even a police run. Never knew they existed in blued steel.

I'm going with the idea it's probably been refinished in a coating product like Cerakote, Duracoat, etc. It helps explain the lower price. The RENE Reference only shows SP101s in stainless, no blue, ever. And I doubt Ruger would ever go to the bother of casting carbon steel frames along with the trigger guard and barrels for a special order, even an agency contract order. If they did it would be noted and catalogued.

I bought my stainless steel SP101 2.25" in 38 Special brand new for $399 about 2 years ago. 38 Special is not nearly as popular as 357 so the prices can be quite a bit less if you look around. Knock off $100 for being used and another $100 for being refinished in something like Cerakote and you could be at $200. Just saying it's plausible.

A solid SP101 for $200 sounds like a good buy.

Agree with the above. Probably stainless with some type of coating.

I wouldn't buy it for an investment, I think you would find it difficult to turn a profit on that one.

OP, I see the problem here. You're under some delusional idea that you don't NEED another revolver. Of course you do!

I figured it was a coating but still an SP for $200. If it is mechanically sound then whats not to like. Can the coatings like Cerakote be removed once they are applied??

If it's mechanically sound, one solution could be to buy it and sell your other one to help finance the Canik.

Yes it can but it takes blasting it off with a media like aluminum oxide. That in turn leaves a finish similar to the Ruger Hawkeye Matte stainless (like the stainless GP100 Wiley Clapp for instance.) Similar but not exactly the same. You could then proceed to polish it back out to a smooth surface and go high polish or brushed. A lot of refinishing work and probably not worth it. But then I like a nicely done Cerakote job in a good color so it wouldn't bother me in the least if the OP's SP101 is 'koted. I've actually toyed with the idea of Cerakoting my SP101 just to make it different.
