Ruger Service/Speed Six

Just picked up a Police Service Six and Speed Six, both SS and 4 inch barrels.
Both stamped 154- which I believe is 1978, neither have the "warning billboard" on barrel. Paid $810.00 out the door for both, good deal or not??

Nice set! Seems like a reasonable price for both. Have fun!

154 is a 1979 production year. If that was tax included i would say you made a pretty good deal. They are "Sherman Tanks" I own several .357 and .38 Special. Good looking guns............

RAA69 answered this, but yes the Service-Six had a square butt grip and the Speed-Six had a round butt.
The Security-Six had a square butt grip frame and adjustable sights. All three versions were produced in carbon steel (blued) and Stainless Steel.

The Speed-Six's were more commonly found with 2 3/4" barrels but as you can see in the OP, they also came with 4" barrels.

The Six series Rugers were GREAT guns. The OP got a good deal !

According to my reference source, the warning label appeared in January of 1978.
1978 serial numbers for the Six series DA revolvers start at 153-60425.

As far as I know the warning roll marked on the barrel continued all the way until the end of production in 1988.

A couple of possibilities exist for a 154 prefix without a warning label.
1. the gun could have been rebarreled at some point after production.
2. the warning roll mark may have been removed by filing and polishing

I'm also not certain that the January 1978 date is an absolute date for the beginning of the warning label.

What nice guns! I think the OP did good on his deal since he said that was a total OTD price. Those revolvers are tough and good looking. I remember late '70's promos aimed at LEO's showing a Ruger rep slinging one across a parking lot, then running it over with a cruiser spinning the rear tires to sling the gun back across the parking lot. The rep retrieves the battered Ruger, loads it, and dumps a cylinder full into a target w/o issue. Made a believer out of me.
Yesterday my shooting partner and I were planning our next woods trip. I said I need to work on presentation from concealment with a new holster, 50yd rimfire rifle, and 200yd high power rifle. He said ok and mentioned that would give him a chance to work with his new/old Ruger. He told me he had picked up a Speed Six snubbie a while back but hadn't shot it because he had it out on loan. He loaned it to a young couple having problems in their neighborhood. The cops were always at their neighbor's house, and their home had been hit by "stray" bullets. The Speed Six is what both of them did best with on a range-day dedicated to letting them try different handguns. They have since purchased their own home-defense gun, and my buddy has the snubbie back. I'm looking forward to putting the old girl through her paces.
