The lug is the bottom part of the barrel. The GP in your avatar is a half lug, if it were a full lug gun, the ejector shroud would be flush with the muzzle.

Your avatar is half lug , if your barrel was all one diameter it would be a full , your SP is most likely full like mine.

Hi Roger,
Look at your avatar picture - there is some metal below the barrel that extends out to cover the ejector rod. Your picture is a 'half' lug; if the metal bit covering the ejector rod went all the way to the end of the barrel, it would be a full lug.

For the length barrel your picture shows there is not a lot of difference, but for a 6" or longer barrel, the difference in weight and balance of the pistol is a big deal. Target shooters like the full lug, for the weight forward balance; also, some like the full lug for help with muzzle flip or heavy recoil. Others like the feel and weight of the half lug.
Cheers,
Frank

If it has a full lug, it means it's ugly

Full lug

I actually prefer my 4" GP100 in full lug for the feel, but I like my 6" half lug better for overall balance. Those 2" make a huge difference in the full lugs, my 6" full lug feels like a lead pipe with a handle on it! I still love it though.

I just wish Ruger would keep making all barrel lengths in both half and full, I have a 3" full lug, would like to try the 3" half lug model.

FWIW there are pics on the Bowen website of a "de lugged" GP100, for those interested in dropping the coin to have a full custom 4" half lug with adjustable sights, which I don't believe Ruger ever made.
