Super redhawk .44mag accuracy

Hi Everybody, I am newbie from Finland. Just left my introduction under correct topic so let me go to the point.

I shoot silhouette with my .44mag Super Redhaw (long barrel). I have started to load my own ammo by using Finnish made copper plated swaged lead bullets. Archipelago bullets called. Probably not very well know outside Finland. My aim is to develop two or three good loads. One baby load, for field pistol silhouette shooting. And for my daughter as she is shooting my Ruger too. My light load uses 225 bullet. The I do need good load for grown-up men, like me. And for BBP silhouette of course. Maybe 270gr or 300gr bullet. I am planning to use vihtavuori powdes as it is the most available powder here. I think Vihtavuori N110 (fastest rifle powder) is quite much similar to Hodgon 110? I am going to use N110 for 300gr bullets. For 225 gr bulltes I am using Vihtavuori N350 (slowest pistol powder).

Now, my question is about potential accuracy. What kind of groupings I can expect to see with my Ruger. It would be very interesting to hear/see the very best results shot with .44mag using the very best bullet available. I also like to see what kind of accuracy can be found with casted bullets. I am really interested about shooting ranges up to 100 and 200 yards (meters).

Thanks in advance

My Super will shot the Metallic pigs at 100 meters going and coming. I can hit the turkeys and rams at 150-200 meters it takes more work. The gun is plent accurate I am the problem at longer ranges. I load 240gr swc in mine all the time. The Ruger is my favorite and it will do the job no problem.
Good Luck

Terve, FinnishVisitor!
Archipelago bullets are fine, but I have heard reports that very high velocities will shave the copper plating off, especially if you have some misalignment between the chamber and bore. Avoid seating the bullet deep, try for a longer OAL so that the bullet hits the forcing cone with lower velocity.

Tjänare WhistlerSWE, jag bo när Wasa stad men jag talar inte svenska.

Yes, I have made OAL as long as possible. There is not too much of bullet inside the brass at all. I am also using relatively slow powder in order to make bullet start gentele.

It so shame that Archipelago bullets company is sold out now. It is about to move to Sweden. Lucky you. They told that bullets will be still available here, but I am affraid that price will jump high.
I have FP competiton coming in month and I do have only a handful of 225gr bullets left. Trying to look some more. We are going to shoot FP with open sight and FP with scope same day and SBP too. That will be quite much shooting for one day. I know my gun shoots well. The very first competition with Ruger was succes. Beginners luck, I guess. Or just prefect day for me.
I have been shooting Magtech ammo and now started with reloaded. I think my (baby) load is slightly better than Magtech but I am not satisfied yet. Maybe I have to try once more with slower powder?

I am practising with my Super Redhawk for Field Pistol silhouette competition. FP have max distance of 100 yards (instead of normal 200 yards) and silhouettes are half size only. I got 26/40 hits during my last session. Shooting with iron sights, not scope. I am shooting 225gr bullets from Archipelago bullets. My load have OAL of 42.8mm (1.685"), I can't make it any longer. Velocity is very modest, only about 1200 fps. I found that the best for this bullet.
I tested my load to 100 meters shooting from sand bag by using scope sight. I shot 18 round to 8" to 9" group. I would like it to shoot better. 9" doesn't leave too much marginal at all.

Mine shoots into 3" at 100 yards with 300 grain xtp's.
Also does it with heavy cast.

Shoots into 4" with the light 240 xtp and lighter cast

Thanks, thats what I'd like to see my Ruger shoot too. I'll have to give a try for heavier bullets (casted) and then jacketed later on coming summer.

The 265 gr jacketed soft point works great at 200 with a rather warm load
