Question Ruger SP101 Used forsale is $425.00 a good price??

Hi I have made a few posts that I am looking for a small 5 shot revolver for CCW. I have been considering the Ruger SP101, some of the Smith J Frame prelocks ( new ones are total crap!) and possibly a Taurus Model 605 or 617. Well I found today a nice used Ruger SP101 2-1/4 inch barrel in .357 magnum. It appears from the pictures to be in nice shape also comes with 2 speed loaders well the owner is asking $425.00 for this gun. I can buy a new one for $469.00 + sales tax so just under $500.00 knowing the price difference from new to used is $425.00 for a used SP101 a good buy or not? I haven't had the chance to look at this gun yet the guy lives about 60 miles north of me. But I am not in a hurry but any feed back would be appreciated thanks!!!!!

My dealer sells the used SP101s for around $359. Different areas have different prices depending on availability and competition.

Used price

Used SP101's go for 400.00 in my area,(SW Ohio)
if they are lnib. Speedloaders are ten bucks each.
A new one plus two speedloaders would cost 515 with tax.
Looks like you would save 85 to 90 dollars if you bought it.
I say buy it if it is in good shape and the model you want.
( ie barrel length, spurless hammer or not)

PS I highly recommend staying away from Taurus.
I say that from personal experience, not hearsay.

For what it's worth, my son just sold his SP101, one year old in Feb 10, with all accessories and two speedloaders for $ 425.00 locally..(Northeast Ohio)

At the local gun shows I've recently seen majority of SP101's going for over
$ 450.00 (used) New as high as $ 560.00.

Used

Freinds don't let freinds buy Taurus!

I must admit I own 1 Taurus but it's an older Model 83, and in a moment of near weakness last month almost bought one of their 9mm snubs.......luckily I regained my senses and didn't buy it!

I would say the majority of used SP101's aren't all THAT used, I mean most owners of snubs don't blast 10,000 rounds through them.

And also, given the fact that it's a Ruger, and if the past owner fired a few hundred rounds it doesn't really make a bit of difference, if you can save $200 and get one that looks like it has a low round count and was just carried a little bit I would say go for it. But given only an $80 price difference, used vs. new you might as well just go for a brand NIB one. I passed on a used .327 SP101 for $300 because the guy thought the ammo was too expensive and wanted a .357 instead......I'm kicking myself now!

Just a couple of month's ago I bought a brand new 3" SP101 from BudsGunShop.com and the total cost of the gun was $437 and that included shipping to my FFL.

Ruger Redhawk will become famous soon enough
Check on GunsAmerica - Guns - Guns For Sale Classifieds & Auctions B"H - Guns For Sale & Gun Auctions B"H and see what they are asking. Figure what it would be shipping and your FFL fee. I got a couple good deals on GA. Those prices sound a bit steep to me.Believe me it pays to shop around.I got a New LCR for 393.00. At Gander Mountain was 499.00 on sale.

l'm not bashing Taurus but like others said stay away from them. I had a bad experience with a brand new Taurus. When it got back from them a new Smith M-637 replaced the POS the same day.

No hurry

If you're not in a hurry then make the hunt fun, start going to gun shows in your area or start what many of us for sure do, a "gun and pawn shop tour"......I call it "making the rounds" when I get bored I just hit the 5 or 6 gun shops in my area and see what I can turn up.

I am glad I fought off the urge I recently had to pick up a Taurus, I probably would have regretted it. I had also thought about getting one of their Model 65's and read some bad, bad stuff about them, involving cracks in the cylinders and numerous reports of timing going off, and bullets striking frames of revolvers from going off without being locked up! If it happens enough for there to be reports of it, it's too many. I have never, ever read anything or heard first hand about a Ruger firing out of lockup or developing a cracked cylinder from normal use.

I'm starting to be known as the "revolver guy" because when I walk in they sometimes point me in the direction of a used S&W that came in on a trade. I don't see many used Ruger wheelguns where I live, those I do see are either Redhawks or SRH's.

When I wasn't looking for an SP101 I saw plenty of them at gun shows, now I'm "kinda" thinking of picking one up in the near future.

I started to force myself to sllooooww down my gun collecting and actually take time to enjoy what I buy. I get into a "zone" and start feverishly accumulating everything I can lay my hands on (funds allowing which isn't much these days) and don't actually enjoy myself.......so now I am trying to actually, for a change SHOOT and enjoy what I buy instead of just test firing a new "find" in the back yard, and before it's even cleaned I'm already planning what I want next.

I came away from my local shop today with a LNIB 2.25" spurred hammer SP101 for 375 out the door. They had 399 on the price tag but I'm a regular customer and they cut me a deal. This makes SP number 4. Great guns.

I would second that. Where I got mine price for new was around $450, used was in the $360 ballpark

SP101 3" bbl SS $460 new. Best price I could find in the area. $460 figures to be 25% off list FWIW.
