Not certain, but this gray finish may be created using a ferric chloride bath on the stainless steel...

I'm thinking about experimenting with this after the weather warms up this spring.

I really like the target grey finish on the guns too. I have a 22 mag target rifle that has a laminate stock and target grey finish. It is very attractive and I just wish they would offer it on more of their guns.

Yes, but not an applied finish:

American Handgunner 2002, John Taffin:

Quote:
The .454 and also the .480 Super Redhawks are the same size and shape as the .44 Magnum version. However, the latter boasts a typical stainless finish while the .454 and .480 versions are a sort of grayish green that The Old Man's marketing people decided to call "Target Grey." Why they misspelled "gray" is anyone's guess.

It turns out that "Target Grey" is simply the color that occurs when the steel parts of the Super Redhawk are tumbled in industrial tumblers. "Tumbled Gray" might have been more accurate.
The Target Gray guns are tumbled in a fine tumbler media that produces a very smooth exterior and this Gray color. Their finish is much smoother than the typical brushed stainless look of the Ruger stainless guns, though this is a stainless steel and from all reports is as or more corrosion resistant than the typical stainless steel.

The Target Grey finish makes me wonder if this finish has some sort of acid treatment? But I really like the Target Grey Finish!!!!

Very practical finish, too - lower glare and shine than regular stainless.

Is the finish the same or just similar to the Wiley Clapp GP100? Looks an awful lot alike but then it's sometimes hard to tell from pictures. Had a hard time capturing the "grayness" of my WC GP100. Camera flash kept washing out the gray and photos looked like dull SS.
