Trying to figure this out.

Ruger Security Six started with tapered barrel and unscalloped frame.

Then in '79 they went to a heavier barrel profile, adding weight.

Then in '82 the scalloped the right side recoil shield to reduce weight.

So, assuming a Stainless 4 inch, would the early, pre-'79, tapered barrel model be lighter or heavier than the late, post-'82, model with heavy barrel and scalloped frame?

I'm thinking about searching for a 4 inch Security Six and wanting to go with the lightest option. I know the difference in the three configurations probably don't differ by much.

Not certain on your figures on a Security Six but very excellent revolver had one in 6 inch. But hey a Ruger GP100 they are also very nice. I also like very much S&W K frame guns I have a Model 66 no dash and the L frame guns 586, 686 also very excellent guns as well.

I think your last line pretty much sums it up. There will not be much difference.

The early tapered barrel may actually reduce the overall weight more than the scalloped recoil shield. However, the slightly heavier barrel puts the additional weight out front, where most shooters want that little extra weight. The scalloped recoil shield (which I think looks a little better) removes a little bit of steel from the gun but not very much.

If there's an overall difference in weight, I think it would be very small.
