Having Fun With The GP100.....Again

Another variation on a theme I guess. But I sure like 'em! Tried a different media this time and I think it's somewhere between the old Target Grey and the Hawkeye Matte Stainless.

Another 3" stainless steel GP100 chambered in 357 Magnum with factory adjustable sights. Until Ruger gets on the stick and brings back the Model 1708 (or 1709) this is as close as I can get.

Now that the old compact "Lett" is back I'll have to try a set on one of these. But for some quick pictures I put this Altamont snakeskin set on to give it a bit of the Clapp look.

That is awesome! How in the world do you make your Ruger so cool!?
Elves.

Cool slabs! Wonder if it was a Davidsons?
It was a 1751 in 38 Special and I believe all of the 1751s were flushed through Davidson's and out to dealers. This one didn't come directly from Davidson's but it probably started out there.

I like the slab sided barrel look in general but it also accomplished a couple of things here. It eliminated the old laser engraved markings - the billboard and the caliber. Since it's been re-chambered to 357 I didn't want the old 38 Special marking on the barrel.

The hardest part of this one was actually the engraving. I wanted the "RUGER GP100" back on the barrel so it has the manufacturer name and model and I also wanted to put the correct caliber marking as well. I decided to make the "357 MAGNUM" prominent since that is the unique aspect of this configuration - 3" 357 with adjustable sights.

The engraving was done locally on a CNC machine and required a surprising amount of time selecting font, spacing, height, location, etc. Went through several samples to decide depth and even blasted the samples to see how they would look finished. Crazy how you can bogged down in the details sometimes. Believe it or not I started on this in February of 2014 - 18 months! It sat on the back burner for a very long time hung up on the engraving.

Perfect! Just Perfect! Love the finish Wave, I'd like to do this to my 1751 as well. Nice project Man!

Thanks all for the nice comments. I realize this look isn't everybody's cup of tea but it's one I'm kinda partial to and at least it's something different from what the factory does.

Wouldn't a peek inside the factory in NH be great? Might be a real eye-opener though - sorta like pulling back the curtain and seeing the wizard in "The Wizard of OZ"....
