Looking at the possibility of purchasing a new Gp100. I have found an older model NIB GP100 blued with 1/2 lug. Rubber grips with wood inserts.. My assumption is that this is an older model? Also have seen a newer model GP100 full lug blued.. Difference in price is about $10.00.. My question: Is there any distinct reason to purchase one over the other? Are the newer models that much better? I actually like the looks of the older model much more.. Ant information appreciated.. Thanks
To each his own - I prefer the looks of the full lug. Based solely on speculation, with no scientific backing, I suppose the argument could be made that the full lug would be more robust and a better "shooter" because of less recoil with the added weight.
Like you I also like the looks of the half lug under the barrel. I have a newer 6" GP in Stainless with the newer style grips. I have noted that many people on this forum prefer the older grips with the wood insert and purchase them to put on their GP's. The workmanship may, and I say may, be better on the older GP100. Although I can find nothing wrong with mine.
I guess it boils down to what you prefer. Maybe you will get some input from the experience of others here on the forum.
I too prefer the full underlug barrel. I also prefer the rubber grips with wood panels, but they can still be purchased from Altamont to put on a new revolver. Personally, I also prefer stainless steel if given a choice. I own both a new and older GP100, and I am partial to the older ones, but either way my selection is more based on fitting and functioning of the particular revolver being considered. Either old or new should give you a lifetime of shooting enjoyment.
I much prefer the full lug, it really makes the look of the GP. Considering the price difference, I would definitely get the new one for a couple reasons. A. Whoever is asking a new price for a used gun is asking too much and you'd be silly to go that route. B. You know the new gun is new and you have no idea what the used one has been through. Chances are it's just fine but at that kind of price, why risk it?
Recently acquire a new match champion. I found that I just couldn't get comfortable with the Hogue grips even tho they look super. I went with the Altamont rubber w/rosewood inserts. I do like the 1/2 lug look and do think the shimmed trigger and hammer shims do a good job. Its been a few years since I've had a Security Six but I believe I would vote for the new gun.
Old vs new well for looks to some the full lug. But to me it's a no brainer if the old GP100 is NIB but yes a older model.......buy the half lug GP100 it was made when there was more pride & better quality control!!!
I found one of the 6" half lug GP100s a few years ago. I much prefer the balance of the half lug to the 6" full lug. I also like the balance of the full lug 4".
The half lug is out of production and highly desired by many.
There is no "good" and "bad" era for Ruger, the 2014 production 4" GP I recently bought is one of the very best shooting revolvers I own, and has one of the best actions.....and I own dozens of Ruger DA revolvers.
I'd be inclined to buy the new-in-box half-lug since they are no longer produced except in the MC.
You can always get a full-lug later and then you'd have both.
Goodness! It's probably far too late to weigh in, but the 1/2 lug models sell at a premium and, honestly, make no difference in shooting. I think they have a nice look. That said, I have a 3" GP100 in stainless and love it (I did have to find some of the old style grips with the wood inserts -- they fit smaller hands much better -- reduced reach to the trigger).
