This is my 8 th SP in 20 years. Sold the prior ones due to not finding a grip I liked. I purchased a .357 LCR and immediately liked the grip. I like the LCR but for a hunting, hiking, fishing and jeeping gun I wanted a little more heft. I found a good deal on a new .357 SP101 and modified the LCR grip to fit. Drlled and tapped a 10-32 hole and attached the grip with a sling stud(can be used as a lanyard). I love the feel and wish they would offer this from the factory or as a hogue production.
JKURC thats a really neat setup there! I never really have had a problem with the SP101 grips even with the stock factory grips. The Hogue grip might be 1/4 on a inch longer then the factory grip but it looks like it helps with felt recoil. I guess my thoughts to your setup is if you wanted a smaller grip that still works on recoil then Wow nice idea there!
I purchased my GP100 over the SP101 because I couldn't get comfortable with the SP101 grip.
I am very comfortable with the LCR grip.
Someone posted they didn't like the LCR as there is no place for the pinky.
My pinky wraps under the butt of the revolver very comfortably.
What a great idea for your SP101
Sturm Ruger, are you watching?
That is a great idea as it shortens the grip over the Hogue Monogrip SP replacement and still gives your knuckle some relief from the trigger guard. Would definitely conceal better than the Monogrip because of length. Something to consider....thanks!
This is great. I positively hated the standard grip on my SP, so I replaced it with a Hogue Monogrip which is a little long for cc. Hopefully Ruger is watching.
Went to the range today. Shot .38spl, 125 & 140gr JHP .357, also shot some 180gr hard cast .357. I have to say, these grips made a huge difference in the felt recoil and shootability of this gun.
HOGUE and RUGER, please look into this grip set up.
I hope that Ruger and/or Hogue's product development guys are scanning this forum. This would be the "Goldilocks" grip for the SP101. And with the knuckle protection to boot? Perfect!
I wish the hole drilling was it. I had to remove some material from the inside to match the contour of the SP frame. I was lucky to have a set of badger grips to lay on the LCR to show the frame difference. I am really glad I pulled the trigger on this project. If hogue would make these and use the stirrup style mount that pins to the sp101 frame, I think it would be a seller.
I was ready to sell this one until the grip swap. I have used all the custom grips over the years. I am a big fan of the .357 for all purpose use in Indiana. Shooting with GSM 180gr hard cast is manageable. I would like to try the hogue grip from the 3" LCS next.
I thought of the same exact thing when I 1st saw an LCR with it's grip removed being I've owned a half dozen SP101s over the years..
Ruger/Hogue missed their opportunity to exploit the SP101 for concealed carry with this grip option..
Now to go out & find an old SP101 that's begging for a new home..
I know where one is BTW.. Trying to resist, Also came across an old walnut stock factory 10/22 that all but mint begging to be taken home & put up in the gun rack.. Been put away for a long long time..

Headknocker, you revived a really old post. I tried making some lcr grips into SP101 grips, but ultimately decided not to drill my grip frame for the screw at the base. I don’t make permanent modifications to a defensive revolver- I’ll do springs, sights, grips, but not drilling, filing, or polishing.
OLD THREAD but still want to try a LCR Grip on a SP101
Thinking about this Hogue
Bantam Grip modified to fit SP101 plus drill @ Tap the grip tang as @JKURC the OP stated in the OP
Like the one @JKURC made up
I also want to know were to get a lanyard grip stud like the one in this photo 10/32 IIRC?
Sweet Setup = Small enough to carry but has padding too..
RUGER HOGUE are you listening, These will sell to put on these now overpriced revolvers
I bought one for my LCR, and didn’t really like it. Too small for my medium sized hands.......I mean 1/2 my ring finger was hanging off the grip.......well maybe not that bad, but close!
Great for conceal, bad for shooting............for me.
Went back to the stock LCR grips.
