whats up with the plastic front sight on my super redhawk

Hey guys I just joined the forum because im a little irritated with the plastic crappy front site on my new super redhawk 44 I just bought. When I got the gun I was very impressed with how nice it seems to be built its just a great looking gun except for the cheesy front site all black plastic with a little piece of red in it. I said oh well ill just order something better so I did but come to find out the after market one are for an older design where the front sight has a metal base with a sight held in by a spring loaded pin. I found this out when I called ruger and they said the new design has the plastic ramp sight. Ive looked and looked to try and find an aftermarket fiber optic sight to fit my gun and cant find anything it has to be a full plastic ramp sight that is held on by 3 screws. Thanks

Pictures? 4.2" barrel? The longer barreled SRH have used the same front sights as the GP100 and there are a lot of options as you already know. I thought the 4.2" guns used to use a pinned front sight but now use the same interchangeable front but it sounds like you have something else. Having trouble picturing the 3 screws comment. If it's a completely new design then the aftermarket sight people like Hi-Viz, Williams, etc. will need time to catch up.

Ok so I was partly wrong the main portion of the front sight is steel with a little chunk of orange plastic stuck in it. Problem is they changed tye way it mounts its no longer like the gp100. I have been searching but cant seem to find a nice fiber optic sight that will replace this type of front sight.this is the 7.5 inch barrel and to me im not a fan of this front sight at all.

Does the sight hit what it's aimed at? If you've not shot with it yet..... Try it out first. Give the end an opportunity to justify the means. If it is terrible well then look for options then. options may be limited. If so I am sure you can find a local smith who could fashion a sight more suited to your needs. Great gun you got either way!!! Congratulations on owning a regal beauty like that one!

Hasn't really been resolved since I still have not found a replacement for the crap sight. It shoots ok just not very good for low light. Maybe Im just spoiled with all the fiber optic sites I have on my othere guns. You would think for what they cost they would come with something a little better. I absolutely love the gun though very fun to shoot

DPris will become famous soon enough
I'm not understanding the problem.

Read the first post & thought WTH?
Was doing photos earlier today on the .454 Super Red that came in last week with envelope dated 6-16-14.
Did not notice any plastic beyond the typical red/orange insert. Just hauled it out to double check, steel.
Neither the base nor the ramp is plastic, just the small red insert. This is a very common method of using a steel base with a colored insert, not cheap & not confined to Ruger.

Read further posts, found you noticed the sight is not plastic.

Don't know what your complaint is.
Ruger makes red-insert sights & has for many years on many guns.

This one is not the interchangeable version found elsewhere, but it is a very usable sight.
Not cheesy & certainly not crap.
What were you expecting when you bought it & why did you buy it if you were unhappy with the factory sight?

Denis

Didn't realize there were 2 different versions of the front sight when I bought it. And bought it new on gunbroker.com so it is what it is. Yes the sight is functional but wish I could go with fiber optic sight. The primary use for this gun is going to be hunting whitetails and I'm sure with practice I could use the sight it has now but in low light don't think I wouldn't like it much. I was really just looking for someone that may have found another option for the same gun with the same sight. If I don't find one then I may just scope it though I wanted to avoid it as the options for holsters drop considerably with scopes but there are a few.

Thanks for the photos. I don't know the history of front sights for the SRH but looking at Ruger's website it appears all of the Super Redhawks have the same front sight as you do (except the Alaskan.) Have you disassembled the front sight yet? Curious how that blade is secured. Doesn't look like there's a roll pin involved so there must be some other means. Perhaps there's something out there that could be adapted but it looks like you have a quest on your hands. Of course there's always the custom route but that could be spendy.

Red ramp inserts are a classic looking sight and found on a lot of S&W besides some Rugers. They're a big improvement over plain black blades at least. Good luck.

Thumbs up Meprolight

I have a set of meprolights on my SRH and they work well in low light/no light situations.

Alot of the super redhawks have a front sight that looks the same but the base and blade are separate parts. They are like the one in this picture where you push the pin in the hole on the end and you can lift the blade out. This design has options for swapping the front sight and this is how I thought they all were as these were the ones I had always seen. The shape is identical but it is different.

These will not work on the new SRH. Front sight insert has a different base it would appear from the OP photos.
