Shot the heck out of my new SP-101 yesterday

Finally got another chance to get out in the woods to do some shooting yesterday. I mostly wanted to try out my 4" SP-101 but also brought my S&W M27 (8 3/8" barrel) and my Sig 1911 Match Elite. My son and I got the target frame set up and put the new Ruger through it's paces. We tried several different handloads through it including 50 158gr flat nose cast, 50 158gr cast SWC, 75 125gr JHP, 50 140gr JHP, and 25 rather stiff 140gr JHP. All testing was done firing from a sitting position. First we tried out the two cast bullet loads. It did rather well with them and if that's the best it could do I would have been happy with that. We did have a couple of misfires with the 9lb hammer spring but after re-installing the 10lb spring we fired the next 200+ rounds without incident. Next we tried the 125gr JHP (hornady xtp's) and the little pistol seemed to really enjoy those. With carefull trigger control at 50ft we could both easily fire 10 shot groups keeping all of out shots within the 8 ring on a 50 yard small bore target. That's a little under 3". Not going to attract the attention of the Olympic commitee but not bad for the first time out either. It is also the bullet that my Smith likes the best which is handy. Next we tried the 140gr xtp's and they also did well. Not as consistant as the 125's but the pistol may like the faster bullets. The heavy(ish) 140's actually printed about the same as the earlier 140's and the Hogue monogrip absorbed the recoil very well with neither of us feeling any effects after all those rounds. We fired about 50 rounds through the S&W also but 50ft is too close for that pistol and it was kind of a pain to have to keep replacing the little orange dot in the center of the target after every couple of shots. My son really loved the Ruger. His job puts him in the woods several hours a week in some pretty lonely areas looking for invasive plant species etc. For him it would be an excellent companion. Maybe at christmas time?

Ruger's SP101 is an excellent choice for many applications...especially now that they've added the 4" version...hikes in the woods are more comfortable as are strolls down the street!

Congrat's...hope you enjoy it for a long time!

I shot my 4" SP101 last Friday. I was not shooting at targets, just some jugs full of water at different distances. I could keep mine on a milk jug at 60 yards. I think that is plenty accurate enough.

I carry mine in the woods all the time. We have wolves in our area and twice I have caught them stalking me.

Thanks for the report, gryphon. Glad you are having fun with that SP 101. Although, it is hard not to have fun with a revolver like that!

That is my favorite revolver in my collection, well, it's my only revolver and my wife's favorite to shoot. I'm dead on with that 4" barrel out to 100' and it's my open carry piece.
the more you shoot it the more you will like it.

Went to the range today with my daughter both shooting SP101's 357 mag with 3 inch barrels. Had fun sending lead downrange.
