Charger Mare's Leg

This is the current iteration of my Mare's Leg.

The Dot sight has a laser included.

Overall length is about 22 1/2 inches. With a cheek weld on the short stock while pushing forward on the forend and holding back on the pistol grip, I shoot about as well as I do with a rifle out to about 50 yards.

It seems to me, this would be a great back-packing and/or survival .22 and it is great fun to shoot!

I sent the stock to ATF for evaluation and I have a letter from them stating a Charger action mounted in this stock is a pistol. The key dimensions seem to be about 6 1/2 inches cut off the rear of the stock and the end of the stock being about 3 inches from the center of the pistol grip.

Comments welcome.

Awesome! It looks excellent. I like these Mare's leg projects using Chargers. I like the optic, but perhaps you could find iron sights for it. I think that would be cool also for the wilderness

Do you plan to do more or make a holster?

It occurred to me that one could cut down a 10/22 carbine barrel and put the front sight from a Tech Sight set in the rear dovetail. The rear peep sight could then be mounted in place of the rail.

I like the dot with laser because my eyes are old and the laser lets you shoot accurately as long as you have enough light to identify your target.

I might make a holster; I'm considering attending a Tandy Leather holster class.

I made mine to the exact measurements of the Henry Mare's Leg.

howdy fellas, I was recently searching the net for Charger Mares leg and ran across these posts and decided to join the forum...I have always wanted to build a mares leg using the Charger...I see a lot of the photo links in some of the threads are lost and no pics are available.

I too would love to see the letter posted, CheckSix, many folks have been the trail leaders in getting BATF letters for things like cane tips and AFG's on AR's , so there is no harm in posting the letter , just be sure to block out your name, its important in some states that others can print the letter and have it with the gun in case you get a hassle at the range or by an unknowing LEO

I appreciate the idea that posting the letter might encourage others to make a Charger Mare's Leg.
The letter says that having cut 6 1/2 inches off the butt stock of a 10/22 carbine stock, leaving approximately 3 inches of stock from the middle of the semi-pistol grip to the end, rendered the firearm no longer deemed "designed to be fired from the shoulder."
The problem is that the letter applies to my stock only. If you make one, you have to convince the "authorities" your stock is the same as mine and that ATF, if they saw your stock, would agree with you that the two are the same. (I put "authorities" in quotes because, just this week, I had a range officer tell me I had a short barreled rifle. The letter settled things without incident.)

Basically, if you make it the same dimensions as the Henry Mare's Leg, you'll probably be O.K. The "length of pull," distance from the trigger to the end of the stock, on the Henry is about 7 1/2 inches. I made mine 7 inches to be a little shorter. The ATF measured the stock, only, and said it was legal as a pistol.

My advice is make your stock close to the dimensions outlined above and send it to ATF.

Call first, if you like, I found them to be most helpful, even solicitous.

The alternative is to make your stock according to what you assume will be legal and hope for the best. A copy of my letter will not declare your stock legal; a photo of your firearm next to a Henry Mare's Leg would probably be more convincing.

The most important thing to remember is that you must prove the receiver is a handgun receiver.

All Chargers are mark " Charger " after Serial on the receiver on left side and that will prove it originally a pistol correct .

Yes, all Chargers are marked Charger.
The question would arise with an after-market receiver. You would have to have proof that it was sold as a handgun. Handgun sales have different restrictions than rifle or shotgun sales. You must be over 21 and I really don't remember what else.

Where would you add a swivel for a single point sling?

anything involving ATF is being between a rock and a hard place....they have already made changes to Sig Brace ruling.....I would be careful cutting down a stock without something in writing....

I tend to agree.
I called them and sent my stock, only, to them for evaluation. I keep a copy of the letter with my Mare's Leg at all times.
I found ATF to be very helpful.
