Charger questions

I'm looking at getting a Ruger Charger for plinking, target shooting, and possibly small varmints. It will be used at both a range and out in the field.

Couple of questions:
1. Is there any difference in reliability, maintenance, or accuracy for the takedown and standard models. I'll probably be using a red dot sight.

2. Does the "Takedown" feature really save much space in a backpack?

3. How well do the new style Chargers work for off hand shooting (no bipod)? I would probably go with a Stark grip with built in sling mount and use a single point sling for extra support.

Can't help you on the takedown version questions, but the first edition version I had was a capable offhand shooter, though I had to use more of a silhouette stance rather than a conventional fully extended handgun stance.

I would assume most people don't shoot them in a manner similar to handguns. I shot a pistol gripped 12 gauge that way once just to see if I could. The recoil wasn't the issue, holding it extended was (I guess the former governator was a little stronger than me when he filmed Terminator 2). I could only keep it out a few shots at most, then I got too shaky to hit a target. I know the Charger is considerably lighter than a Mossberg 500, but it is still probably 3-4 pounds and extends out pretty far.

I have 3 Chargers, 1 original and 2 Takedowns. No reliability issue from one to another. The 2 regular 10" barreled Chargers shoot great offhand. My latest with a 16.5" barrel I shoot 2 handed with skeltonized fore grip and a single point sling. I can hit a 6" steel at 25yds 25/25 without additional support.

It's a whole bunch of fun!
