What type of scope rings are compatible with the Ruger American Rifle?

Hello, I am considering buying a Ruger American Rifle, but I have questions about how to mount a scope.

I don't know what type of rings this rifle takes.

Also, it says: "Bases Supplied". Are bases the same as rings?

Thank you for your help.

I haven't looked at the Ruger all American Rifle but it has been my experience with my M77 that it came with Ruger rings that clamps directly on the receiver or your rifle. If your rifle just mentions mounts it might require a set of scope rings to go on the mounts. If this is your setup your rifle might work with Weaver type of rings. If so there are several brands that make Weaver style scope rings. Good Luck!

the mounts are attached to the rifle and can be flip flopped depends on your preferred eye space/ length of draw on the firearm.. (arm length plays a dig part).. Weaver or Leopold medium rings is what I will recommend to you, look at the Nikon or Redfield for good quality low cost scopes. enjoy your new rifle!

There are some very good videos out there for basic mounting of a scope. The rings serve 2 functions. They mount to the rifle bases on the bottom & mount the scope on top. So, you need to look at 3 requirements when picking rings. The size of the rings(i.e. for a 1" scope) the height of the rings( a lot of bolt -action rifles like the RAR do not have sights, so mount as low as possible for the scope bottom front to clear the barrel. Finally, the mount type, for the RAR is a "Weaver type" mount. Mind you, these are the basics. you can "google it" or look at Cabela's website, they have a good basic video for mounting a scope. Also, if you are close to one, you can actually look through the scope prior to purchase, which is always a good thing.

The Ruger American come with Weaver type bases. Get the Burris Signature Zee rings like these:

Burris 1 Signature Zee Weaver-Style Rings Matte Medium

No kiddin' - they are fantastic.

Welcome from North Carolina...

I suggest buying some good rings like the ones Son of the Gael suggested.I always used the Redfield bases and rings, Leupold or Millet.
I don't have an RAR but the Weaver scope mounting system has been around for a long time and allot of people us that set up. The RAR come with Weaver or Weaver type bases You can have high dollar optics but the optics can only be as good as the mounting will allow.

As mentioned, I would go with Burris Signature Rings, medium height is as low as you can go with those rings and will work well for scopes up to 42 and possibly 50 mm (worth a try but don't count on it) objective lens' and the Ruger stock comb height.

If you have problems in not getting enough elevation or excessive elevation while keeping the reticle in a near centered position you can get a set of eccentric inserts for about $10. The same goes for windage adjustments.

The new Burris Signature rings come with torx headed screws to clamp the rings on the Weaver type bases and in the rings.

These are the only type of Weaver type rings I will buy.

I decided to go with the Burris Zee rings (medium height).

After I found out from this thread that the Ruger American Rifle comes with the "Weaver" style base, they were an easy choice

For those besides the OP who already got rings and I saw this too late... These are what I have on my RAR .243...
Amazon.com: Burris XTR Rings 1 Inch Medium 420181, Black: Sports & Outdoors

I like them a bit more due to the spread out clamping force and 6 screws holding it all down per ring vs just the 2. Just my personal opinion but I LOVE mine, and I LOVE the look it gives mine as well. For anyone else out there looking for rings, and if you have amazon prime... same price as the above stated rings.

Welcome; Ring that will fit a "Weaver Type Mount"... Depending on the size of the scope you're mounting, medium for up to a 40mm scope & high, if you're mounting a 50mm...

Good choice, I'd much rather use steel rings than the aluminum rings.
The ones Vink70 suggested and I'm not saying they aren't a good ring. I have no experience with them. They just wouldn't be my choice for a couple reasons .They are aluminum so I would have passed on those, plus unless it's a very high recoiling cartridge I don't see the need for the 6 clamp screws on each ring.

It definitely has a weaver base. I completely forgot to check before ordering my picatinny TPS TSR rings. Now I have an EGW one piece picatinny mount on its way to fix the problem.

The TSR low rings on the factory mount put my Minox ZA3 3x-9x-40mm nice and close to the bore though. It looked like no more than a centimeter gap so if you have a scope in that range their weaver rings should work well for you. It is always best to measure these things out though. Make sure you see how the manufacturer measures their rings too. They all seem to measure differently.

Just an FYI, I'm using the EGW 20MOA base with Burris Zee LOW rings with my Nikon 4.5-14x40 with no problem, there's room to spare.

Ditto. The gunsmith at the LGS recommended them for my .243 RAR. I got them in a medium height for a Redfield 4-12x40. They are very solid. Truth be told though, I probably could have gone with a lower profile setup if I wanted to get the objective closer to the bore. But I'm really not that good a marksman that it would make much difference anyway.
