For those of you with both GSR barrel lengths . . .

For those of you that have both the American 16.5 and 18 inch barreled versions of the Ruger GSR:

1. Can you tell the difference in the muzzle blast?

2. In low light can you tell a difference in the muzzle signature?

3. What are your feelings about the two rifles now that you own both lengths?

Thank you!

Come on, someone has to admit to having one of each.

I have one of each but they both have 16.5" barrels. They are exactly the same.

I do have a Steyr with a 19" barrel and with factory ammo it has a bit less flash than the GSR using the same loads.

I don't see that as a reason to pick one over the other. If you are buying ammo them you will get maybe 50 fps faster velocity from the longer barrel. No real difference to my way of thinking.

Now the Stainless barreled action in wet and cold areas does. I would pick the stainless for less daily care in the field if I hunted in the cold wet parts of the country. If I was in the desert South West or High Plains I would not worry about it.

I have been trying hand loads with powders that burn 100% in the shorter barrels and they have very low flash and sound a lot different. if you roll your own the powder you use makes more difference that the barrel difference of 1.5".

JMHO,

Roadie

1. No
2. No
3. At 300yds the longer (stainless) is a tad tighter (1/4-1/2"). At 100yds, no real difference, three rnd group makes a nice, small, closed triangle.

What powder are you using? I have not been able to find Vargit in two years.

My 16" tube likes the 168, 173, 175 grain bullets. Are you finding the same? It does shoot the PMC 147 gold well though.

What does your 18" GSRs like to shoot?

GSR Fan....Varget is pretty easy to get in my area.....see it online also ? LGS here has had plenty of powder all year, bullets have been thin, but I have been finding online on a regular basis. Primers are making a comeback in my area.....In my experience most
.308's like heavier than 150 bullets, My GSR likes 168's and above. I tried some Sierra 210 BTHP's, only one load so far and that particular load did not shoot well...plan on experimenting more with it....
